Ronald William Love

Age 84 Died April 27, 2018 with his family at his side in his home after a long illness. He was born August 2, 1933 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, the son of the late Albert W. and Dolores (White) Love. Ron is survived by his wife, Pat; two children, Amy and David; his grandson, Xander; brother, Albert; and sister, Marilyn. Ron graduated from La Crosse Central High School, then served in the U.S. Army for two years. After his discharge from the military, Ron returned to school and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. He continued graduate studies in Psychology, earning a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His doctoral studies included a clinical internship at Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown, Conn. Ron's love of helping others and his drive to serve his community shaped much of his personal and professional life. Ron worked professionally in a variety of capacities as practitioner and director, including hospital and clinic settings, developing community programs for elderly and adolescents, and was acutely sensitive to the needs of children, adolescents, and their families. He used his knowledge and skills to provide services and teach parents, educators, high school counselors and other professionals in the process. Ron served as a Head Start consultant for three years, and was active in professional psychological associations throughout his career, serving populations from children through the elderly. He also founded and developed a chaplaincy training program and served ministers in both Nebraska and Minnesota. In 1974, Ron and his family moved to Minnesota to follow Pat's wish to attend graduate school. Ron continued to work with both adolescents and adults, and in the 1980s he formed a private practice in Arden Hills with two of his colleagues. He worked there until his retirement in the early 2000s. Ron was well-loved for his sense of humor, and became affectionately known as Papa Love. He had a lifelong passion for fishing, loving nothing more than taking his family along on cold early-morning outings and camping trips. He was also an avid photographer, owning many cameras and spending hours in his self-built darkrooms, experimenting with many different developing techniques. A visitation open house will be held on Thursday, May 3rd from 3-6 p.m. with a time for sharing at 5pm at Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell Funeral Home, 515 Hwy 96 West, Shoreview.
