Roger Stuart Holmes

Roger Stuart Holmes, of New Brighton, MN passed away on August 9, 2025 at age 72 after a long 7-year battle with chronic illness. Roger was born on April 12,1953 in St. Paul to parents James and Grace Holmes. He was raised in New Brighton near Long Lake, Minnesota along with his two brothers, Alan and Don Holmes and dog, Rusty. Roger was a proud graduate of Irondale High School and then continued his education starting at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, followed by the University of Minnesota for both his bachelor and graduate study. He married Jane Holmes in 1974 in Minneapolis and had three children: Emily, Katie and Erik. Roger spent the first part of his career at the University of Minnesota Extension Service, where he coordinated 4-H programs across the state, including the Minnesota State Fair. Roger studied horticulture at university and could tell anyone how to get their plants to flourish. Later, he spent the last few decades of his career in management at AT&T. In retirement, he found joy in watching birds at his feeders, painting, playing bingo, and seeing his children and grandchildren, but sadly these years were quickly interrupted by profound health challenges. In his most vibrant moments, Roger loved hosting gatherings with his closest friends. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his beloved dog, Rosa. He will be remembered for humor, love of a fun party, and his grit throughout his long health battle. Roger is survived by his three children, Emily (Vince) Peeler, Katie (Allan) Quesada and Erik (Rachael) Holmes, ex-spouse Jane Holmes, brother Donald Holmes, eight grandchildren Annika, Will, Kate, and Karl Peeler, Fredrick and Daphne Holmes, Marcos and Lucia Quesada, nephews and nieces, extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Grace Holmes, brother Alan Holmes and sister-in-law Lyn Holmes. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at the Washburn McReavy Holcolm-Henry-Boom-Purcell Funeral Chapel in Shoreview with a 10:00am visitation and 11:00am service, reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of Minnesota Extension- 4H program are preferred.
