Robert John VandenHoek

Robert John VandenHoek was born January 30, 1948, to parents Calvin and Mildred at Springfield, MN. The oldest of six, he was joined by sister Kathleen (Scott) McClure, brother John (Diane), sister Mary (John) Rodgers, sister Julie (deceased), and brother Mark (Patty). He married Shirley Rowe on July 12, 1969 at Luverne, MN. Their marriage was blessed with son Paul (Melissa), daughters Mary (Robert) Taylor, Megan (Luke) Morrison, and Kelly (Christopher) Peterson. His grandchildren were his pride and joy - granddaughters Alexis (AJ) Taylor and Abigail (Abby) Peterson, grandsons Nate and Ben Morrison, Caelan Taylor, and Jordan and Jackson VandenHoek. Bob grew up in Luverne, MN, and graduated from high school in 1966. He attended the University of MN, completing his degree in 1970. Bob’s career was spent in the housing industry, starting with Eberhart Company and retiring from the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency, where he worked for 33 years. He was a resident of Edina until his retirement from MHFA in 2010, at which time he and Shirley moved to Walker, MN, full-time. They had built a home there in 2005. Being on Leech Lake afforded him the opportunity to catch walleyes and chase the illusive Muskie. Bob loved the outdoors. His favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting, and working on his lawn. He loved to landscape and work with grass and trees, especially during his time in Wallker. He also enjoyed the sunshine of Lake Havasu, AZ, during several winters. Health needs required a move back to Edina in April 2014. There he and Shirley became charter members of Giving Voice Chorus, an activity he loved. Not only did he enjoy the music, but many new friendships were formed. Bob never met a stranger. He could start a conversation with folks who were pumping gas or using a public restroom. All who knew him remember his warm hugs and a smile that lit up any room. He loved nothing more than to host and entertain family and friends. Special thanks to all the staff at Legacy Care Home in Minnetonka where Bob spent the final year and a half. It is, indeed a special place. Thanks also to Brighton Hospice and Bluestone Physicians who helped to manage his care.
