Robert Alan Schwartzbauer

Edina - Schwartzbauer, Robert Alan a gifted attorney and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully on June 22nd. He was a man of unquestionable integrity, introspective reason, and a compassion that was blunt but unwavering. Bob was born on July 5th, 1944, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of Bernard S. and Helen B. (Ringus) Schwartzbauer, and the youngest of three boys. His life was filled with academic and legal successes, shaped by the strength of his family and the no-nonsense ethic of his Rice Street neighborhood. His brothers opened the door to Cretin High School and helped steer his future, while his lifelong friends inspired his sense of fairness and loyalty. He remained grateful to them all. Attending the University of Minnesota, he met the love of his life, Karen. The two shared a life filled with celebrations and hardships, hard work and adventure, music and sports, debates about colors, boat rides, banter, golden retrievers, and love. They welcomed their first son, Christopher, before graduating from college, followed by Jessica and Peter a few years later. After graduating from the U of M in 1966 with honors and Phi Beta Kappa distinction, Bob earned his Juris Doctor from the U of M Law School in 1969, where he served as managing editor of the Law Review and graduated cum laude. That same year, he joined Dorsey & Whitney in Minneapolis, where he would spend his career. He became a partner in 1975, chaired the Minnesota Continuing Legal Education Board in 1987, and repeatedly earned recognition in Best Lawyers in America for his work in business litigation and antitrust. Over the years, he led several complex federal and international antitrust cases, earning a reputation for precision, ethics, and insight. He also dedicated time to public service, providing pro bono counsel to Assistance League MPLS/St. Paul and serving on the board of MAP for Nonprofits in support of charitable and low- income businesses. Beyond work, Bob had many hobbies, and he pursued them all with intensity. Whether camping and fishing in Canada, playing golf and tennis with old friends, woodworking, taking photos of ducks and shooting at them, or simply traveling to Europe, he planned and practiced with diligence, investing as much in preparation as he did in the act. He took pride in his cameras and his shotguns. He enjoyed the utility of Velcro or a good label maker. He loved his cars and his first-edition Ludlum novels. But despite that meticulous intensity, he knew how to relax, with a glass of good wine or watching the sunset on Bay Lake. Bob is preceded in death by his daughter, Jessica, and her children, Izaak and Anika. He is survived by his wife, Karen, his sons, Christopher (Carrie) and Peter (Stephanie), and his grandchildren, Samuel and Lydia. The family will hold a private service on July 14th in Edina. A public celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
