Robert J. Berres Sr.

Berres, Robert J. Sr. age 93, of Edina, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2013, seventy-nine days after the death of his beloved wife of 70 years, Alice. He was born on March 25, 1920 to John F. and Kathleen (Tierney) Berres in Minneapolis. He is also preceded in death by his parents, his baby twin brother, John Joseph, brother Jack Berres, sisters Patricia Berres, Kathleen (Dr. Robert) Dornbach and Margaret Mary Berres. Also preceding him were two children, Elizabeth in 1953 and James Paul in 1964. He is survived by six children, Robert J. (Judi) Berres Jr. of Phoenix, AZ, Mary Pat (Skip) Mills of Omaha, NE, John (Kathy) Berres of Alberta, MN, Ann Berres of Burnsville, MN, Margaret (Tom) Asby of Eden Prairie, MN and Tom (Deb) Berres of Rosemount, MN. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and thirty-two nieces and nephews. Aside from his family, his two main interests in life were music and Dodge cars. He was blessed with a beautiful tenor voice which he cultivated at West High School and Minneapolis College of Music. He sang with many vocal groups and church choirs, including the Our Lady of Grace choir. He especially enjoyed his twenty years with the Minneapolis Apollo Club. He sold Dodge cars for 48 years at several Minneapolis dealerships, ending his career at Hopkins Dodge as fleet manager. He was fascinated with the psychology of salesmanship and in his later years wrote and published a book about it, ‘No Thanks, I'm Just Looking.' After retirement Bob and Alice moved to their lake home at Maple Lake, MN which had a large, well-equipped workshop where he could pursue his hobby of restoring old Dodge Brothers cars. He restored several, including a 1915 Dodge Touring car, a 1920 Dodge Roadster, a 1924 Dodge Touring and a 1936 Dodge Sedan. For twenty years they attended almost every Dodge Brothers national meets all over this country and Canada, usually with one of these four cars. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 1, at 11:30 AM at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 5071 Eden Ave, Edina. Visitation 1 hour prior to Mass (10:30 AM) at the church.
