Richard W. Swenson

Swenson, Richard W., age 76, passed away on November 24, 2016. Dick was first and foremost a lover of God and people. A committed Christ follower, he wanted everyone to know the deep love that he had experienced and to show them the incredible love God had for each of them. His pride and joy was his wife and family. He was married to his high-school sweetheart and best friend, Ruthanne, for 56 years. Together they lived in many states and made many dear friends across the country. A career Navy man, Dick retired as a Sr. Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service in 1977. He loved the planes, the people, and the places he lived during his Navy years. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for Johnson Screens as the plant manager and set up their plant in Lafayette, LA servicing the oil industry. An avid fisherman, he fulfilled a life-long dream of owning his own Bass ProShop in Lafayette, LA. In 1987, he returned home to Minnesota and began a 20 year career in real estate which included establishing his own brokerage, Dwellings Realty. His son-in-law, Peji Ameli continues to operate Dwellings as an agent with Keller Williams. It was Dick’s great joy to help people find their homes and he formed many dear friendships with clients and agents along the way. In recent years, Dick had continued to fish like a fiend, by boat during the spring summer and fall, and on ice during the winter. It was one of his greatest passions and he delighted to share it with grandchildren and anyone who had an interest. As a chaplain for Fisher’s of Men he was able to share his two greatest joys, Jesus and fishing! His crowning achievement was establishing a new ministry called “Field Hands”. His vision was to provide basic training to equip believers to share the love of Jesus in the relationships in which God had placed them: at work, in their neighborhoods, in their leisure activities or wherever they were. Most of all Dick’s true pride and joy was in his family. He adored his wife, Ruthanne and everyone knew it. He often said how proud he was of their three kids, Wendy Young, Jay (Lee) Swenson and Julie (Peji) Ameli. He was not only proud of what they achieved but more so about who they were and communicated his love regularly. His favorite title of all was Bumpa to his 14 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was deeply loved by each of them and will be sorely missed. The whole family feels blessed to receive the legacy of love and faith that characterized Dick’s life. The memorial service celebrating Dick’s life and legacy will be held at 11AM on Monday, December 5, 2016 at Wayzata Free Church, 705 Cty Rd 101 N, Plymouth, MN 55447. Visitation at 10AM. Interment at Ft Snelling at 2pm. Memorials to Wayzata Free Church.
