Richard D. "Dick" Lambert, 89, of Bloomington, MN passed away on Monday June 12, 2023 at the Wealshire of Bloomington after a five-year battle with dementia and heart failure. Dick was born on August 6, 1933 in Willmar, MN to Frank and Berenice Lambert. Dick grew up in Renville, MN and graduated from Renville High School in 1952. There, Dick excelled in baseball, basketball, and football. Dick met his future wife, Charlotte (Char) Waletzko (from Morris, MN), when they lived in the Uptown area of Minneapolis. They both shared a love of dancing, and commanded the spotlight on the dancefloor. The couple loved jazz, and accumulated an impressive collection of Jazz records. They were married on May 2, 1964 in Morris, MN. The couple moved to Bloomington, where they raised their two sons. The family enjoyed vacationing in the Black Hills, and in the Brainerd Lakes area with close friends. Family reunions, picnics at Bush Lake, holidays and birthdays were also very special times. The family also loved to visit Charlotte's childhood home, a farm outside of Morris, MN. Dick was employed by the City of Minneapolis Public Works Department for 35 years, and was awarded the Father of Waters bronze sculpture by the Mayor of Minneapolis. Before retiring, Dick was active coaching little league sports in Bloomington, volunteered on the security committee of his church, played the stock market, collected coins and vintage license plates, and along with his wife, collected Japanese china and antiques. Dick was a lifelong fan of thoroughbred horse racing, and was a great fan of Canterbury Downs Racetrack in Shakopee, MN. He had attended live and simulcast races there since the track opened, and was a great ambassador of the track, promoting it by getting people to patronize the track, and taught them how to read a racing form and place bets. Dick loved to go out to eat, and his favorite meal was breakfast. He was a regular customer at several restaurants in town, where he could be found promoting horse racing over eggs, hash browns, and coffee. His favorite restaurant was Mancini's in St Paul, where many a fine meal was enjoyed by Dick and his family over many years. Dick was a self-less man, and provided for others, even when it meant he had to do without. His sons were his hope and joy, and he generously blessed them all of their lives, standing behind them in their ventures, even though he may not always agree with them. Dick extends his love and appreciation to his friends, fellow retirees, classmates, and neighbors, and spoke of them all often. Dick is survived by his sons, Anthony and Christopher of Bloomington, MN; as well as countless friends, acquaintances, and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte; parents, Frank and Berenice Lambert; and beloved "grandsons," family dogs Fred and Boo. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 24, at noon, at Washburn-McReavy Dawn Valley Chapel, 9940 Bush Lake Rd, Bloomington, MN 55438. Visitation one hour prior. Private interment for immediate family to follow at Dawn Valley Memorial Park.
