Richard "Dick" Dahlager

Dahlager, Richard "Dick" of Bloomington, died on August 21st, 2015, at the age of 81. Having cheated death 23 years ago, he couldn't do it this time. His last year of life following his diagnosis of non-Hodgkins lymphoma was hard, but he extracted every ounce of enjoyment available to him and was surrounded by people who loved him to the end. Dick grew up in Kensington, Mantorville, Monticello, Farmington, and Waseca. He graduated from Waseca High School in 1952. At St. Olaf College, from which he graduated in 1956, Dick played football and expressed a healthy rivalry with the Carls across the river. He earned a masters degree in education in 1960. Dick taught high school physics and chemistry in Detroit Lakes and Brainerd, before his 32-year stint as a 9th grade science teacher in Edina. Devoted to education, he created the first kindergarten in Burnsville and administered it for three years before the school district established one. An avid sports fan (he seldom missed a Twins game), Dick coached junior high school football and was the official scorekeeper for the Edina high school basketball team for decades. He loyally attended his grandchildren's hockey, soccer, and baseball games even in bad weather. After his retirement in 1993, Dick was able to enjoy traveling all over the world and summers at the lake with his Mule Lake family. He loved to fish and garden and spent many happy hours in boats with his family and friends. Dick was a proud liberal with a love of justice, as well as a life-long teacher with a love of learning. He and his wife Marj devoted countless hours to volunteering in the community. Dick accomplished so much, and all without ever owning a cell phone! Dick was predeceased by his parents, Karl Olaf and Muriel Dahlager, and by his parents-in-law Myron and Alma Griswold. Dick was dearly loved by his wife of 56 years, Marjorie; his brother Ken (Sonja); sister-in-law Mary West; children, Mark (Laura Melnick) and Eric (Pam); grandchildren, Elana and Ari; nephews Steve (Cari) and Tom (Darla Rodell) and their children Tyana, Kaden, Mason and Nora; niece Caroline (Henry Kwiecinski) and their children Jack, Mary Kate, and Matthew; and grandpets Josie, Roxy, and Chopper (and great grandpet Agamemnon). Dick's wife, kids and grandkids meant the world to him. Everybody who met Dick (also known as "Buppa") loved him. The family would like to thank Dr. Kumar and the wonderful and caring staff at Fairview Oncology-Hematology, as well as Dr. Thanarajasingam and Dr. Truty at the Mayo Clinic, for the remarkable care they took of him. Memorials preferred to ECLC, Beacon, or donor's choice. Funeral service Wed., Aug. 26, 2015 7 PM at Edina Community Lutheran Church, 4113 W. 54th St., Edina with visitation one hour prior.
