Raymond Newman

Newman, Raymond Alfred 85, Bloomington. Died Nov- ember 26, 2007. "That it will never come again is what makes life so sweet." Emily Dickinson Preceded in death by wife, Ellen; parents, Erick and Hannah; siblings, Nestor, Alyce, Aili, Edna, Melbourne, Bernard, and Dagney. Survivors include sons, Scott (Debra) of Lakeville, Tony (Anne) of Shakopee, Erik (Rayette) of St. Paul; daughters, Chris Howard (Richard) of St. Louis Park, Julie Rokke (Paul) of Fargo, Lynn Newman of Bloomington; grandchildren, Anton, Dana, Daniel Newman, Andy, Kelley, Jamie Newman, Nick and Jon Howard, Erica and Jacob Rokke. Ray was born in Eveleth, Minnesota on November 11, 1922. He graduated from Eveleth High School in 1941, from Eveleth Junior College in 1943 and received a Bachelor of Social Work in 1948 and a Master of Social Work in 1950 from the University of Minnesota. He was a veteran of WWII and served in the Occupation Forces in Japan. Ray married Ellen Omernik of Spooner, Wisconsin in 1949. Ray was a clinical social worker at the Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in Minneapolis from 1950 to 1985. He served as the Chief of Medical, Surgical Section Social Workers and was coordinator of undergraduate and graduate internships in social work. Ray was also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota. For 35 years, Ray was an active member of the Fort Snelling Federal Credit Union serving as a board member, Loan Officer, Treasurer and Chairman of the Su- pervisory Committee. He was League Director, Minnesota League of Credit Unions and President of the Archer Doig Chapter, Hennepin County Credit Unions. In Bloomington, Ray served as a Scoutmaster, Camper and Treasurer of the local Scout Troop. He also coached youth hockey and football. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours at Hyland Park in Bloomington and tending to the roses and tomatoes in his garden. Special thanks to the staff at Fairview Home Care, Presbyterian Homes in Bloomington and to the Trauma Medical Staff at HCMC. Ray's family is very appreciative of their care and kindness. Memorials to the Ray Newman Scholarship Fund, College of Saint Benedict, Office of Institutional Advancement, 37 South College Avenue, St. Joseph, MN 56374; International Wolf Center, Ely, MN. Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, December 1 at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, 4201 Sheridan Ave S, Minneapolis.
