Rachel Ann Sumoso

Rachel Ann Sumoso, 73 of Minneapolis, MN, passed away on January 13th, 2026 surrounded by loved ones. Rachel was born on October 20, 1952, in Eveleth, Minnesota, to Frank Erjavec and Margaret Ann (Martin) Erjavec. She spent her early years in Fayal Township, MN, in the home her father, Frank, built. As the eldest of seven children, Rachel naturally became a caregiver and guiding presence in her family - a role her younger siblings lovingly recognized by calling her the "matriarch" sibling of the seven. From an early age, Rachel demonstrated a deep sense of responsibility, compassion, and steadiness that would continue throughout. Rachel moved to Minneapolis in 1970, spent a period of time in California, and eventually returned to settle in Minneapolis, MN. Wherever she lived, she carried her Iron Range roots with pride, holding her identity as an Iron Ranger close to her heart. Caring for others was not only Rachel's profession, but one of her many life callings. After studying healthcare and earning her associate's degree, she dedicated more than 35 years as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Rachel approached her work each day with patience, empathy, humor, and dignity, providing comfort to countless individuals during their most vulnerable moments. Rachel's calling to care was seen at its purest in the pride and joy she held as a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend. Rachel poured herself into her family, offering steady love, encouragement, and protection. She took immense pride in her daughters, step-sons, and grandchildren, supporting them with both tenderness and hope. The relationships she built within her family, friends, and community, were the center of her life and the source of her greatest joy. Rachel was an avid reader and lifelong learner who delighted in celebrating others and making them feel seen and valued. She was also seen at her happiest: dancing and singing along to her eclectic and impressive record collection or on road trips Up North, casting from the dock at the lake while teaching her children and grandchildren how to fish, navigating the Minnesota State Fair each year with her Blue Ribbon Book in hand, traveling locally and abroad, thrifting, and the conversations shared over meals with her closest friends and family. Rachel is survived by her children, Christine (William) Wrobel; Destiny (Arthur) VanBuren; Korto (Jason) Dixon; William Sumoso; and Prince Sumoso; her grandchildren, Cecilia Orlikowski, David Franklin, Mateo VanBuren, Veda Dixon, James Dixon, and Emery Sumoso; her great-grandchild, Brooks Connors; and a great-granddaughter on the way. She is also survived by her siblings, Michael (Debra) Erjavec, Kathryn Erjavec (John Rodorigo), Mary Erjavec, Amy (Joseph) Brazerol, and Emily (James) Lozinski, as well as many close friends, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Rachel was preceded in death by her grandmother, Anna Legacy; her parents, Margaret Ann Erjavec and Frank Erjavec Jr.; her son, David Sumoso; her brother, Charles Erjavec; her niece, Anna Rodorigo; her close friend, Patricia Parker; and her former husbands, Alexander Sumoso and Rowa Sherer. She was also preceded in death by multiple aunts, uncles, and cousins. Rachel's legacy is one of compassion, laughter, service, and unconditional love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for all she gave to those in her life.
