R. Paul Marvin, Ph.D.

Age 91, of White Bear Lake Paul was born in Terrill, Iowa on July 18, 1918 and spent time in Gray, South Dakota. Later his family moved to a small resort on Partridge Lake, MN and graduated from Brainerd High School. His career as an educator started soon after high school when he graduated from the Crosby-Ironton Teacher Training program in 1937 and became an elementary teacher in a one-room school house near Crosby-Ironton, MN. After attending the St. Cloud Teachers College in 1939-1940, he continued teaching grades 5-6 in Sebeka, MN. Paul's teaching career was interrupted by World War II. Soon after marrying his high school sweetheart, Ruby Schutt, he was sent to the Pacific to serve in the 20th AF of the U.S. Army Air Force where he flew numerous missions as a navigator and radar operator on a B-29 bomber crew. After the war, Lt. Marvin received his B.S. degree in Agriculture Education from the University of Minnesota in 1948. He then taught high school Agriculture Education in Hastings High School until 1949 and Faribault Public Schools until 1950. He returned to the University of Minnesota and received a Masters of Science Degree in 1957 and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Education in 1960. He then joined the University of Minnesota Agriculture Education faculty as a teacher educator. As an educator and academic, Dr. Marvin consulted and worked on numerous international development projects, sending him to all corners of the globe and earning him a worldwide reputation. In 1970, he became Chairman of the Department of Agriculture Education until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1984. During his tenure, he guided a program that was recognized as one of the best Agriculture Education programs in the USA as well as worldwide. His love for his wife Ruby, his family, his numerous friends, and all of the students and colleagues of his 45 year teaching career has enriched the lives of countless people around the world. He also enjoyed fishing, spending time at their cabin and watching Lawrence Welk with Ruby. Paul Marvin will be greatly missed by all who have known him. Paul is survived by his wife of 65 years Ruby H. Marvin; his daughters Suzanne Marie Hartle (husband Darrell) and Julia Leigh Schneider (husband Robert "Bobb"); his grandchildren R. Todd Hartle (wife Jill) and Sarah Suzanne Hartle; and his brother Lowell. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Verabelle Marvin, and his brother David. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 1000 Long Lake Road, new Brighton, MN 55112, (NW corner of I-694 & Long Lake Rd) ph. (651)633-1327. A visitation will be held before the service at 10:00 AM. Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials can be sent to the "Dr. R.
