Phyllis Evelyn Matson

Phyllis Evelyn Matson nee Fashant, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away on May 3, 2024, in Isanti, Minnesota, at the age of 91. Born on September 10, 1932, in Annandale, Minnesota, to Leland and Margaret Fashant, Phyllis was the loving sister to her older twin brothers, Dean and Don, and her younger brother, Jerry. From her earliest years, Phyllis had a passion for reading, often losing herself in books late into the night, much to the gentle chagrin of her parents. After graduating from high school in Annandale, Phyllis embarked on a journey to Minneapolis, where she began her career in the banking industry. It was there that she met the love of her life, Gordon Matson, on a blind date. Their love story flourished, leading to a beautiful marriage and three children. Settling in Coon Rapids, Phyllis dedicated herself to nurturing her family while also finding time to contribute as a writer for the Coon Rapids Herald. As her children grew older and ventured into the world, Phyllis embarked on a new chapter of her career as a school secretary for the Anoka Hennepin school district, leaving an indelible mark on Madison Elementary and Northdale Middle School. Phyllis's zest for life extended beyond her professional pursuits. An avid bowler, she found joy and camaraderie in participating in bowling leagues both in Coon Rapids and as a winter Texan in Mission, TX. Moreover, Phyllis and Gordon's lake home on Rush Lake became a cherished gathering place where she welcomed family and friends with open arms and her signature phrase, "I am Grandma, let me know if you need anything." She adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always ensuring they were greeted with sweet treats and boundless affection. Phyllis was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 70 years, Gordon, her parents, and her brothers. She is survived by her children, Mark (Jennifer) Matson, Jill (Bruce) Lang, and Kristi (Ron) Bahe, as well as her grandchildren, Ryan (Katie) Lang, Jenny (Brad) Hale, Ali (Taylor) Zent, Aaron Jorgenson, Samantha (Cole) Gaspers, Katie (Kirill) Potapenko, and Cory Matson, along with 10 great-grandchildren. A service to celebrate Phyllis's remarkable life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Anoka, Minnesota, on Friday, May 17, 2024. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. A lunch will be served afterward to honor Phyllis's memory. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Reading Partners of Minnesota. Phyllis's kindness, strength, and boundless generosity will forever be cherished by those fortunate enough to have known and loved her. May she rest in eternal peace alongside her beloved husband, Gordon.
