Phyllis Eileen Gilbert

Phyllis Eileen Gilbert was born March 14, 1958, in Redfield, South Dakota. She graduated Fridley High School in 1976, attended University of Wisconsin-River Falls and University of Minnesota, and made her home in Blaine. Phyllis was a quintessential Minneapolitan. As a young elementary girl, she moved from South Dakota with her family to Fridley in 1966; and soon grew to love cheering on the Fridley Tigers and Minnesota Golden Gophers hockey teams; discovering concerts and local music venues; and attending live theater, including enjoying Guthrie Theater season tickets. Phyllis worked at Minneapolis based companies such as the Minneapolis Star Tribune and Honeywell. She always considered herself lucky to work summer jobs alongside both her mother and dad in their workplaces at Traveler's Insurance and Gresen Manufacturing. Later she joined the ranks of technology firms as a sales analyst working for Alliant Tech Systems, Secure Computing, and EXB Solutions. Classic or current movies; timeless or new music; and best seller books or ancient literature were all favorite conversation topics for Phyllis. She often called a sibling, niece, nephew, or friend to discuss those during her work commute. Both virtual and actual travel intrigued Phyllis. As a typical Minneapolis resident, she was excited about warm weather travels in January and February--sometimes virtually, and sometimes to Arizona or Florida. Memorable trips include a trip to Greece in 1997 where her godson Carl was studying and a solo trip to London in 2008 that included the season opening-night production of King Lear at the Globe Theater. She is preceded in death by her parents, David and Marguerite (Polzin) Gilbert; brother, Michael and brothers-in-law, Terry Hofer and Jack Hoppe. She is survived by brother Jim (Judy) Gilbert of Rapid City, SD; sisters, Linda Hoppe of Maple Grove, Barbara (Charlie) Meyer of St. Cloud, Marilyn Hofer of Sioux Falls, SD, Lonnie (Mike) Mullowney of Andover; sister-in-law Lisa Gilbert of River Falls, WI; 12 nieces and nephews; and a network of extended family, friends and work colleagues. Phyllis leaves a legacy of independence, patriotism, and learning.
