Phyllis D. Colwell

Colwell, Phyllis Daugherty Phyllis passed away peacefully on August 27, 2023 at the age of 93. Phyllis was born in Omaha, Nebraska and graduated from Carleton College where she met her husband, Tom. They met playing softball during Freshman orientation and were married for 71 years. Prior to having children, Phyllis was a child case worker for the Hennepin County Welfare Board. Once her children were school age, she became very involved in volunteer work. She founded and was the first President of Loring Nicollet Center. She was also the President of the board of the Pillsbury Neighborhood Services and President of the Friends of Institute at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. While President of the Friends, she introduced the idea of a new fundraiser for the museum called Art in Bloom which has been a very successful fundraiser for 39 years. Phyllis had a wonderful life filled with worldwide travels, golf, skiing, gardening, and delicious dinner parties with their many friends. Phyllis was known for her exquisite taste in home decor, art, and clothing much of which was collected during their many travels. She became a very accomplished artist - starting with sculpting clay and then eventually becoming a stone carver. Family members are excited and proud to be able to display her sculptures in their homes. Phyllis is survived by her husband Tom, her son Tad (Lisa) and her daughter Carolyn (Tucker). She adored her five granddaughters, Jessica Colwell, Lauren Colwell, Catherine Colwell, Maddy Bonifacio and Clare Dynan. Phyllis had nine great grandchildren Loch, Magnus, Ethan, Gemma, Winnie, Jillian, Parker, Jett and Kit. The family sincerely appreciated all the great and kind care that Phyllis received from the Home Instead staff, Brookdale Plymouth staff and Caretenders Hospice staff. A memorial service for Phyllis will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, October 9 with a visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel.
