Phyllis Eloise Askay

Phyllis Eloise Askay (Horn), of New Brighton, passed away on March 19, 2026, at the age of 98. Phyllis was born on December 14, 1927, in Northeast Minneapolis. The daughter of Kenneth and Doris (Unruh) Horn, and older sister of Jim. She graduated from Edison High School in January 1946. She met Jim Askay through friends of the family, and they were married on October 30, 1948. They added to their family two beautiful daughters, Margaret and Barbara. Phyllis was a stay-at-home mom and homemaker, doing what she did best- taking care of her family as well as her friends and neighbors, young and old. In addition to her activities at Trinity Methodist Church, Phyllis enjoyed her card clubs and square dancing, where she and Jim were co-presidents of the Triple T Square Dance Club (Twin Town Twirlers)! They even got to perform at halftime at a Vikings game! Throughout her life she thoroughly treasured her time at the Hornets Nest- the Horn family cabin at Pine Lake. Phyllis also loved reading and movies, especially the ones on Turner Classic. Watching football, specifically the Vikings, was her favorite pastime, but nothing compared to getting to watch her brother Jim play and coach throughout his career. After her husband passed away, as a young widow at 47 years old, Phyllis went to work at the Minneapolis Water Department. She retired at age 62 to take care of her ailing mother. Time with family was her greatest joy. In the weeks before her passing, she was lovingly supported through the visits from family and friends. At the time of her passing she was surrounded with love and care by her daughter, Barb, granddaughter, Laura, and great granddaughter, Skylar. Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Barb Guille, 6 grandchildren: Matthew Engstrom (Carolyn), Brian Guille (Aprilleel), Andrew Engstrom (Shurene), Laura Guille Fehlen (Philip), Michael Guille (Cyndy), and Nathan Engstrom (Lisa). Phyllis' 15 great grandchildren; Skylar, Quinn, Kaylee, Cecelia, Jessa, Nadine, Gertude, Samuel, Eloise, Bennet, Elijah, Camille, Margaret, Isaac, and Axel. She is survived by her brother-in-law, George Stedman, her sister-in-law, Joanne Horn, nephews John and Dan Horn, niece Carolyn Horn Bauman, and 5 grandnieces/nephews. She is also survived by extended family including the O'Donnells, Falldins, Weidmanns, and many dear friends. Phyllis is now reunited with her parents, her "Husband Jim", her "Brother Jim", and her "Favorite, brown-eyed daughter", Margaret. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed! The Memorial Service will be at Washburn McReavy located at Hillside Cemetery Chapel on Friday, April 24th at 1 pm, with the visitation starting at 12pm. Interment will take place immediately after the service, with a Celebration of Life being held at Rail Werks Brewing Depot, located at 4055 Central Ave NE, Columbia Heights, MN 55421.
