Pamela Dee Schulstad

Schulstad, Pamela Dee, age 74, passed away peacefully holding hands with her husband of 52 years, Denny, at the N C Little Hospice in Edina. A native of California, near Pasadena, she moved to Minnesota to be a stewardess (later, flight attendant) for Northwest Airlines. She retired after 34 enjoyable years of flying over 10 million miles. That career enabled her to make numerous friends and travel around the world. She loved her many trips to London, Japan, Amsterdam and Honolulu. In all those years, her corporate file is full of complimentary letters and not a single letter of complaint. Pam was an only child married to an only child and didn't have any children of her own. Yet, her life was richly filled with honorary daughters, grandchildren and others who looked to her as a loving role model. As the "first lady" of the Minneapolis Aquatennial some years ago, she was an inspirational mentor to numerous outstanding young women. She lived a remarkable life and knew governors, senators, generals, corporate executives, entertainers, athletes, authors and other famous people. Yet, she wasn't impressed with fame, but just wanted to be a good person. In that, she was an overwhelming success. Pam was a dedicated walker and did 10,000 or more steps (over four miles) each day for many years. During these walks, she always carried a bag to pick up litter, not for glory or recognition, but because a good person would do that. She walked around Centennial Lake, Bush Lake, Lake Cornelia, The Landscape Arboretum, the Mall of America or Galleria during bad weather. The paths in Maui and Arizona were favorites. She would greet every dog and knew the names of the dogs, if not the names of the owners. A lover of all animals and birds, she especially enjoyed watching eagles soaring and ducks swimming in the lake at her Edina home. A cardinal would sing and she would stop to locate it. Feeding hummingbirds in her Arizona winter home was a great thrill. Nothing gave her more joy than Buckley, her Golden Retriever, who predeceased her. Pam traveled to almost every state and many foreign countries. Over the years, she was on a dozen cruises and European river boat trips. After retirement she spent a couple months in Maui each winter and more recently in Arizona. Growing up near Pasadena, she never missed a Tournament of Roses parade, either being there in person or more recently, watching on television. On her 50th birthday, she was able to ride on one of the floats. As a 50 year football season ticket holder, her dream was for the Gophers to play in the Rose Bowl and for her beloved Minnesota Marching Band to strut down Colorado Blvd in the parade. That didn't happen, but she still proudly wore her Maroon & Gold. Growing magnificent gardens at her home was a tradition. She was an expert horticulturist and knew the names and characteristics of every flower. She loved attending the State Fair and the Arboretums in Minnesota and Arizona. Pam was a three time cancer survivor. Thanks to the Frauenshuh Cancer Center at Methodist Hospital and incredible doctors and nurses, she lived a great life for 12 years after her first diagnosis. Cancer caused pain and shortened her life, but she never complained or let it defeat her strong, positive attitude and joy of living. When news of her passing was learned, over 200 people contacted Denny to share their feelings and admiration for Pam. Some of the words used to describe her were: strong, cheerful, honest, interesting, sweet, kind, thoughtful, generous, energetic, determined, loving, enthusiastic and positive example. Yes, Pam's was a life very well lived and countless people benefitted from knowing her. As a final deed from this good person, she has donated any organs that might be of benefit to others. She will be cremated and laid to rest with a private graveside service at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Due to covid and her wishes, there will be not be a funeral service, but perhaps a celebration of her remarkable life sometime in the future. Rather than flowers or memorials, please attempt to emulate Pam and be a good person. In Hawaiian, Aloha means many things including: love, peace, relax and farewell. LOVE & ALOHA, DEAR PAM
