Nelma Kathleen Mavison

Nelma Kathleen Mavison (nee Pederson) age 100, of Eden Prairie MN, passed away Thursday November 19, 2020 in her home. Born January 12, 1920, in St. Paul, MN, Nelma lived on a farm in Saskatchewan Canada until age 5. She attended South High School in Minneapolis, MN and graduated in 1937. One of her fondest memories was playing the part of Titania in Shakespeare’s “A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream. She was also a member of the school’s speed skating team. When WWII broke out, she answered the call and moved to Washington D.C where she worked for the Navy for the duration of the war. She continued that career at the Navy Base in Minneapolis until 1957. She married Richard Mavison (Meuwissen) from Chaska in June, 1953. They raised six children and lived in Eden Prairie for over 50 years. She was a longtime, active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Minnetonka MN. She also volunteered at South Hennepin Human Services and ARC of MN. Nelma and Richard loved playing Bridge and were members of the same bridge club for 40 years. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends, and doting over her 6 grandchildren. She was a saint of a mother, and a graceful, kind, generous woman. She was a devoted caregiver to her son Dreux (Doody) and a fierce advocate for the rights of the disabled. When asked what her secret to such a long happy life was, she would reply, “The love of God, family and being Norwegian”. She loved to entertain, and loved having friends and family visit. You could not pay a visit without having a cup of “Norwegian” coffee and having something to eat. Nelma was preceded in death by her beloved parents, brother, and sons Gary and Dreux. She is survived by her husband Richard; children John (Jennifer), Paula (Mike) Rylander, Robbie and Danny; grandchildren Rachel (Ben) Bogenrief, Amy Rylander, Danielle Mavison, Jonathan Rylander, Julianna Mavison and Maia Mavison; special cousin Karen and family from Oslo, Norway, brothers and sisters in law, many Pederson and Meuwissen nieces and nephews, and dear friends from IHM parish. Mass of Christian burial: Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Minnetonka MN. Internment: St. Mary’s Cemetery, North St. Paul MN. Due to COVID concerns, we will have a small family funeral now, and a celebration of life next summer when we can all gather to celebrate the wonderful life she led.
