Muriel Lorraine Littlejohn

Littlejohn, Muriel Lorraine passed away peacefully on Dec. 31st at the age of 97 years young, surrounded in love by her daughters and other family members. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Edward ("Sock") Littlejohn; sisters Bette Stream and Shirley Orr. She leaves her daughters, Maureen Morris (Troy) of New Brighton, MN; Julie Berg (Larry) of Leesville, SC and Rick Littlejohn (Sher); grandchildren Angie Mulvaney (Sean), Joe Morris (Michelle), Matt Morris (Lisa), Abby Morris (Kris) and Alex Berg; five adoring great-grandchildren Holli, Kieran, Aidan, Reese and Brody; brother and best friend, Richard Peterson (Janet) and a trove of nieces, nephews, cousins as well as her cherished "second" family members of the Elmwood Church congregation. Born on July 2, 1922 in Minneapolis, MN to Carl Peterson and Ruby Edstrom, Muriel grew up in small towns across Minnesota and Wisconsin and graduated from North Branch High School in 1939. She attended Humboldt School of Business in Minneapolis earning a secretarial degree. Her first job was at Northwestern Bank before she joined her brother Richard and uncle Bill (Thompson) in Washington, DC. There, she worked at the Pentagon as a secretary for a Marine General. She met her future husband at a military dance at the Coast Guard Training Center in Groton, CT in September of 1944. They married 3 years later at Christ Lutheran Church in Washington DC. Muriel's life revolved around her family, friends and church. She continued to work for many years at the arsenal, various law offices and as well as holding down the fort at her brother Dick's business Tool Engineering. She delighted in all aspects of family life camping, vacations, family gatherings and picnics. She threw herself into raising her daughters - supporting all of their activities from sporting activities, dance and music recitals and even volunteering at their summer camps; and in later years, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid reader, talented seamstress and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She herself was active in various sports until age 61, when she was forced into early retirement by her husband because she continued to break bones trying to remain true to her competitive spirit. She was a true go- getter and set a wonderful example for her family. A celebration of life will be held at Elmwood Church, 3615 Chelmsford Rd. NE, St. Anthony, Friday, January 3rd at 2:00 with visitation one hour prior. A private burial ceremony will take place at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
