Mildred Lucille (Malm) Hossfeld

Hossfeld, Mildred Lucille Malm Five years ago, our mother, Mildred Lucille Malm Hossfeld, passed away at the age of 95 on November 24, 2012, in Minnetonka. We celebrate her life on the 5-year anniversary of her death. Mom was born in Minot, ND, on October 20, 1917 to Edward Clifford and Annetta (Quam) Malm. Originally from St. James and Glenville, MN, Ed & Annetta moved to Minot in the early 1900s where Ed sold farm machinery for the Malm Machinery Company. They moved back to Minnesota in 1924 and settled in Glen Lake (later the City of Minnetonka). Mom attended Glen Lake School from 1924 to 1929, Hopkins Junior High School (later renamed South Junior High) from 1929-31, and Hopkins High School from 1931 to 1934. She attended the University of Minnesota where she received a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Home Economics in 1939 and a PhD in Agricultural Biochemistry in 1950. She met our father, Ralph Lowell Hossfeld, when he was also a PhD student in Agricultural Biochemistry, and they were married in 1942. Mom continued her degree work while Dad began as a professor of Wood Chemistry in the Department of Forest Products at the University. They traveled to ACS (American Chemical Society) meetings; went to forestry meetings at the University's School of Forestry experimental station at Cloquet, MN; spent vacations riding horses both at their favorite dude ranch in Wyoming and on a pack trip through Glacier Park; and bought their own horse, Nova, and donkey, Candlewick, during that time. When their first child came along in 1952, Mom devoted her time creating a loving home full of educational and athletic activities: swimming, diving, riding, ballet, gymnastics, music, and even typing classes in the summers. In 1968, she returned to school and got her Law Degree from the University of Minnesota in 1971. Mom was a wise, non-judgmental person who passed her Old World wisdom on to her children and grandchildren, counsel-ing them and being a person they could come to for advice and help. She was preceded in death by our father (2003) and her sisters Frances Anita Malm (1978), Marguerite Helene Malm (2001), and Dorothea Grace Malm (2003). Survived by her brother Robert Edward Malm (wife Elizabeth) of Los Angeles; her children Lawrence Malm Hossfeld, Leslie Malm Blessing and Anne Malm Hossfeld, all of Minneapolis; her grandchil-dren Melissa Blessing, Andrew Blessing (Whitney), Julia (Josh) Blessing, William (Amanda) Bless-ing, Emily Blessing, and Florence Blessing; and the next generation of great-grandchildren, Gwyneth, Weston, Freya and Stellan Blessing; Hunter and Atlee Grindstaff; and Amelia and Elianna Blessing. We love you and miss you every day, Mom. You are the light and warmth in our hearts. Her memorial was at Washburn-McReavy, cremation and burial at Lakewood Cemetery, Mpls.
