Michael Patrick Sager

Sager, Michael Patrick November 29, 1932 ~ Sept. 3, 2021 of New Brighton, Michael Patrick Sager Sr., loving husband and father, passed away at age 88. Born to Frank and Catherine Sager of St. Paul. Michael graduated from St. Vincent's Catholic Grade School and worked to put himself through Cretin High School in St. Paul. He spent four years in the United States Air Force where he traveled extensively in Europe. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from St. Thomas University and his Master's degree plus 65 credits at the University of Minnesota. He started working as a teacher leading to an administrative career in the secondary Minneapolis Public Schools as an Assistant Principal. He was married to Marcia (Kaufenberg) for 63 years. Together they raised six children. Michael was a family man who loved everyone, especially his wife, Marcia, and was loved by all who knew him. He will be dearly missed by all. He was curious about everything and a lifetime learner and loved to learn from others. One of his joys in life was to see his wife and others happy and he helped make that happen in different ways, including giving many of his visitors a small gift -- clothing, food, trinkets, coins, books, his time, etc. He would also tell stories about his life every chance he got, including writing an extensive life history for his "Sidekick" granddaughter, Kim. Michael was patriotic and loved the United States of America and proudly displayed the U.S.A. flag. He was also proud of his Irish heritage and he and Marcia hosted an annual Saint Patrick's Day party where he and Marcia proudly did the cooking, which they did so often for family get-togethers. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and he passed the love of the outdoors to his children. They fished in Canada for many years and hunted and fished at the family cabin as well; many happy memories were made, a tradition Marcia and the family lovingly continue. Michael is survived by his loving wife, Marcia Sager; his children David (Laurie), Gregory, Terese (Marlon), Michael (Kelly), Denise (Paul), Michelle (Ron), Matthew; 12 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brother Thomas (Mary); sister-in-law Shirley; and other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Donald, Russell, Timothy, and James. The Sager family would like to give a special thank you to the caregivers at Mercy Hospital ICU, Mercy Hospital Cardiac Unit, and the Benedictine Living Community in New Brighton for the exceptional care given to Michael.
