Michael Prebonich

With deep love, we announce the passing of Michael Prebonich, age 84, of New Brighton, MN, on June 17, 2025. Michael dedicated his life to education, beginning his teaching career in Sheboygan, WI, before spending many years shaping young minds in the St. Paul Public Schools. He taught Auto Mechanics and Industrial Arts, sharing his skills and passion for hands-on learning with generations of students. His passion for teaching was matched only by his love for his family and the simple joys of life. A proud Croatian, Michael found great joy in cooking traditional Croatian dishes and sharing them with those he loved. He was a gentle soul with a kind heart, known for his warm smile and generous spirit. He loved being a father and grandfather above all else, and his family was the center of his world. Michael found peace in nature, whether hunting, fishing, or tending to his garden. He cherished quiet mornings with a good cup of coffee, especially at the hunting shack or out on the water. He had a deep appreciation for the reading, often found with a paperback western in hand, and he loved dancing with his wife. Michael was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is preceded in death by his beloved children Bart Prebonich and Kathleen DeYoung, granddaughter Brianna Jerue, and his brother William Prebonich. He is survived by his cherished wife of many years, Sharon Prebonich; his children Marie (Adam) Brewer, David Prebonich, Luke (Kristi) Prebonich, Cheri (Joe) Pereira, and Robert (Shelly) Jerue; and his treasured grandchildren Ashlee (Evan), Madisyn, Mila, Michael, Nolan, Solomon, Brian (Jenna), Robert, Beau (Azalea), Blake (Malia), Bella and Libby. He is also survived by his brother Joseph (Bette), many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and his lifelong friend Kevin Johnson. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Michael's son, David Prebonich, who lovingly provided in-home care for his father over the past four years. His dedication, love, and presence brought comfort and dignity to Michael's final years. Michael's legacy is one of love, kindness, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Services will be held on July 9th, 2025 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 835 2nd Ave NW, New Brighton, MN. 9:45 am rosary, 10:00 am visitation, 11:00 am Mass, 12:00 pm luncheon with interment to follow at St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
