Michael Robert McGuiggan

Michael "Mike" Robert McGuiggan (12/21/54 - 8/11/24) gently, quietly, lovingly heard "Welcome to Heaven" on August 11, passing away after a brave battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family, loving and holding him as he took his last breaths and his beloved dog, Duke, ran out to meet him at Heaven's Gate. His mom, dad, and brother are all there too and we can't conceive of their joy. What an amazing thought that Mike was being held on both sides of this wonderful life by perfect love. It has been so very hard to give this man away, but to what better care? Mike was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Robert and Donna McGuiggan. He grew up in a Richfield neighborhood with his mom, dad, older sister, Alice, and younger brother, David. His childhood stories are filled with friends who built snow forts, rode bikes, walked to the pool, and played baseball together. Having lost his dad and brother too soon, Mike cherished every second with his family. Mike met the love of his life, Kathy, in middle school and the two would start dating once they attended Jefferson High School. After college, they were married and began a journey that would lead to 41 years of marriage. Through the years, Mike and Kathy tackled all of life's obstacles together. They built a home, raised four kids, and stayed true to their original promise that with love there is no fear. To sum it up, they simply had fun together. Mike had the ability to make everyone feel like they were the most important person in the room. He was a storyteller and joy bringer who could make anyone laugh. He brought hope, light and smiles to people, especially when most needed. Mike dedicated his life to his kids, and especially enjoyed coaching their teams. His focus in coaching was always improving the person over the player. He valued the lifelong lessons and relationships over the X's and O's. Having said that, he loved to win. And he won a lot. As his kids grew older, Mike welcomed the transition from dad to grandpa with open arms. Mike was his grandkids' favorite playmate. He loved to make them laugh and they were his favorite people to talk to and be with. They each think of Grandpa as their very best buddy. In his final years, Mike fulfilled a lifelong dream in purchasing a northwoods cabin in Ely, Minnesota. He saw this as his last great adventure and it was the happiest he had been in his entire life. Mike is preceded in death by his father, Robert McGuiggan; his mother, Donna McGuiggan; and his brother, David McGuiggan. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; sister, Alice (Dale); children, Kelly "Chummer" (Ben), Jenny "The Smurf" (Tony), Steven Michael "The Tank" (Kelsey), and Kristen "Angel Face, Twisten" (Kyle); and Grandchildren Everett Michael, Isla, Sullivan, Hayley and Jackson. Mike was the ultimate family man, providing wisdom and protection for the people he loved. He will always be adored and deeply loved by his family. We will be honoring the life of this wonderful man on Wednesday, August 21st in the chapel at Hosanna Church; 9600 163rd St W, Lakeville, MN 55044 with visitation starting at 10:00am. A Celebration of Life Service at 11:00am and luncheon to follow. Private Burial with immediate family to take place at Dawn Valley Memorial Park. Thank you to all who loved him.
