Flaming, Merlin Jay It is with grief in our hearts that we announce the passing of Merlin after a courageous battle with cancer on December 29th, 2021 at the age of 59. Merlin was born in Westbrook, MN on December 2, 1962, the son of Harvey and Eleanor Flaming. The family later moved from Mountain Lake, MN to Watertown, MN where he graduated high school in 1981. From a young age, Merlin was a skilled carpenter and that passion led him to pursue his life's work in construction. He was quick to help family and friends with his talents and was well loved by his co-workers at AAA Minneapolis where he served as a Building Services Technician. Merlin was witty, ever ready with a joke, making time spent with him fun. He loved to be active and spent his free time playing summer sports. He was especially fond of volleyball, softball and baseball. He made many life-long friends on those sports teams including the Minnesota Bandits baseball team and Grace Church Gold softball team. A winter highlight most years for him, was his trip to Florida to play baseball. Music was also an integral part of Merlin. He had a beautiful voice, growing up singing together with his siblings. He continued to sing in adulthood, singing many years in a quartet and often at weddings and other special events. Singing was an expression of worship for Merlin. Merl was generous with a heart of compassion. This was displayed in his life through the basketball missions trip he took to Australia and the countless quiet ways he stepped in to help those around him. Merlin loved his Savior, and wanted all to know Jesus. It brought him great comfort to know he had an army of loved ones praying for him during his journey with cancer. Merlin received his full healing in heaven and now joins the angels in their chorus of praise. He is survived by his siblings Phyllis (James) Groff, Erland (Cheryl) Flaming, and Maribeth (Charles) Curtis; nieces and nephews Scott (Kara) Groff, Ben (Mindi) Groff, Sonja (Erik) Hettinga and Eric Flaming; many great nieces and nephews and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Gail Flaming. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday, January 12th, 2022 at Grace Church Eden Prairie. There will be a time of gathering at 1:00, followed by a 2:00 service. Guests are asked to enter Door 2. Memorials can be sent to World Vision https://www.worldvision.org.
