Mary Louise Gindorff

Mary Louise Gindorff, 99, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026 at The Glenn assisted living facility in Hopkins, MN. She was a lifelong resident of Minneapolis and St. Louis Park. Mary was a member of the very first freshman class at Southwest High School, graduating in 1945. She went on to graduate with her Fine Arts degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She became head of the fabrics department at a high-end department store in the 1950's. Mary gave up her own career to join her beloved husband Nicholas Gindorff in the carpet supply business until his death in 1993. As the daughter of Armenian immigrants, Mary took great pride in her heritage. Mary's mother had a sister and two brothers. The two brothers left Armenia in 1907 to avoid forced conscription into the Turkish Ottoman Empire army. Mary's grandmother led the two sisters (Mary's mother and dear "auntie") on a grueling journey on foot to escape the Armenian genocide of 1915. Mary's grandmother died of starvation on that march, and the two young girls were found and brought to America by the American Red Cross, where they eventually met their husbands and started their families. Mary loved to travel, and relished the trips to California to spend time with her sister Margo, vacations with her husband Nick to Florida and northern Minnesota resorts, and tours of London and Paris. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Nicholas C. (Nick) Gindorff, her father and mother, Paul and Aghevne (Karaghuesian) Moukalian, her aunt Vartonoush (Karaghuesian) Kanian, her sister Marguerite (Margo) Kanner, her cousins Lucille (Kanian) Desteian and Susan (Kanian) Torosian, and many other extended family. Mary is survived by her cousins' children Susan Desteian, John Desteian and family, Terry (Torosian) Kolander and family, and Kim (Torosian) Koeneke and family. Also survived by step-daughter Mary Ellen (Gindorff) McDonough and family, and many other step-children and step-grandchildren. A memorial service for Mary will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 28th, 2026 at the Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel, 5000 West 50th & Hwy 100, Edina, MN.
