Martin Wayne Canis

Martin W. "Marty" Canis age 86 of Minnetonka passed away Nov. 23, 2021. Preceded in death by parents Marvin and Marjorie. Martin is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Ann (Skiba); children Elizabeth, John (Susan), Thomas; grandchildren Lucy and William Canis; sister Marjorie Overson and many other close family and friends. Marty was born and raised in Minneapolis and is a graduate of North High School. During school, he worked with his father at ABC Box & Crating, a business he later took over. First and foremost, Marty loved and cherished his family. They spent many summer weekends up at Big Pine Lake. He and Ann enjoyed family get-togethers, dinner with friends, card groups and travel. A most attentive father, he was present for every school event, recital, tournament and spent many years coaching soccer, softball, and baseball for his children. He had a knack for solving problems and was the go-to handy man for all his kids. He loved spending time with his grandchildren reading books, going to the park, playing store and racing cars. He was a proud Navy veteran and an avid golfer, fisherman and sports fan. First diagnosed with cancer in 2006, he fought bravely for many years, at one point referred to as "The Miracle Man" by his Mayo clinicians. Visitation will be held on Thursday Dec 2, 2021, 5:00PM-8:00PM at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel 5000 West 50th & Highway 100, Edina. Mass of Christian burial will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 13505 Excelsior Blvd, Minnetonka on Friday Dec. 3, 2021, at 11:00AM with a visitation beginning at 10:00AM. Luncheon to follow service. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to his grandchildren's school, Notre Dame Academy, 13505 Excelsior Blvd, Minnetonka, MN 55345. Private interment, Fort Snelling National Cemetery. The family extends their gratitude to the tremendous team of physicians and clinicians that treated Marty over the last decade. There are too many to count, but a few that really standout:  Urology: Dr. Robert McLaren, Dr. Matthew Tollefsen, Roberta and the amazing Kwon Care team - Carrie, Madison, Amy, Jamie and Christine  Neurology: Dr. Terry Burns, Dr. Joon Uhm, Alison Sadowy  Oncology: Dr. Lance Pagliaro, who was so informative, supportive, and encouraging over the last three years. We are so grateful for his expertise, his compassion and his amazing team of nurses that so patiently took all of our calls: Theresa, Judy, Jenna, Bailee to name just a few  The ringleader and champion of them all, Dr. Eugene Kwon, who fought tirelessly over the last 7+ years to get Marty to the absolute best care at every turn. Marty enjoyed every visit with Dr. Kwon and knew we had the best and most fearless soldier in our corner
