Marlys Jeanne Paul

Marlys Jeanne Paul (née Arnt) was born February 10,1934 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and she passed away peacefully on July 6, 2024. Marlys had a very secure and happy childhood. She especially enjoyed fishing with her dad, and helping her mother with elaborate holiday meals for the extended family. She had great admiration for her parents, and was thrilled when they allowed her to take accordion lessons - the only thing she ever begged for. This launched her life-long love of music. As a teen, she attended Washburn High School, where she was an excellent student and was chosen to be an assistant to her high school English teacher. In her spare time, she sometimes went to the roller rink. This is where she met Don, her future husband. They were married in 1952, and recently had celebrated their 72nd anniversary. After high school, Marlys worked for a couple of years at General Mills and then resigned in preparation for her first child to be born. The greatest joy in life for Marlys was to serve her family. She always put the needs of others above her own. Marlys was thankful that she could stay home to raise her two children, and that she was able to live near her parents and always keep strong ties with them. As a mom, Marlys was an excellent guide and teacher; always modeling compassion, loyalty, service, diligence, kindness, and more. The values that she instilled in her children gave them a strong foundation for life. Marlys was a conscientious worker, as she partnered with Don by doing all of the bookwork for his business and other ventures. Her late hours at her home office were evidence of her strong work ethic. Marlys was very musically gifted, and especially enjoyed playing accordion and piano. Marlys and Don spent many years enjoying music together by participating in various forms of dancing, including square dancing, round dancing, and ballroom dancing. Marlys and Don also enjoyed roller skating together. Marlys decided to quit skating at the age of 80, because she didn't want to risk breaking her hand and not being able to play music. Marlys was an extraordinary daughter, wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and friend. Our memories of her and the example that she set will continue to instruct, encourage, and enrich our lives far into the future. Marlys was preceded in death by parents Wallace Arnt and Erna (Johansen) Arnt. She will be missed by her loving husband, Don Paul; children, Dianna (David) Fisk and Greg (Sheila) Paul; grandchildren, Brian, Scott, and Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Felicity and Evangeline, and other close family and friends. A funeral visitation will be held in Marlys' honor from 10:00am-1:00pm on Wednesday, July 17, at Washburn-McReavy Bloomington Chapel. Interment will be at Lakewood Cemetery to follow.
