Marlys Jean Herman

Marlys Jean Gilmore Herman, 92, of Bloomington died peacefully on Saturday June 24, 2023, at Prairie Bluffs Senior Assisted Living in Eden Prairie where she had been a resident since June of 2022. Marlys is survived by her two children: John Herman of Minneapolis, MN and Janice (Greg) Elbert of Algona, IA and Kenai, AK. A grandchild Justin Herman, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Lola and Walter, her husband, Will (November 2020), and sister, Dorothy. Marlys Jean Herman, daughter of Walter and Lola Gilmore, was born on September 24, 1930, in Minneapolis, MN. She graduated from Southwest High School in Minneapolis in 1948, and then attended the Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Northfield, MN, graduating in 1951. She met her husband, Wilbert C. Herman, at his brother's wedding, and they were married on June 21, 1958, at Knox Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, MN. They moved to Bloomington, MN in November of 1958. Much of her nursing career she worked at Minneapolis OB-Gyn Associates and Paul Larson Clinic. Marlys was a member of Mt. Hope Lutheran Church. She enjoyed volunteering and was on various committees. She was an active member of the Swedish Hospital Alumnae Association. Marlys and Will enjoyed traveling the United States and taking the kids to the Boundary Waters canoeing and camping. They owned a cabin at Fifty Lakes, MN for many years. She would have extravagant campfires where Marlys would make treats over the campfire for the entire neighborhood. She was also known for her rhubarb pies and Christmas cookie plates. They also enjoyed multiple trips to Alaska to visit their daughter and traveling the state with their friends. Marlys truly loved her family and made many lifelong friends. A funeral service for Marlys will be Thursday June 29, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Mt. Hope Lutheran Church in Bloomington, MN, with a luncheon to follow in the Fellowship room. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Private burial will be at Dawn Valley Cemetery Friday, June 30, 2023 at 9:00 am. All memorials preferred to Mt. Hope Lutheran Church or donor's favorite charity.
