Marjorie Murphy

Murphy, Marjorie M. Died 14 August 2010 in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the age of 92. She was born 7 August 1918 to John and Edith (Dragoo) Murphy in Lakefield, Minnesota. She earned a B.S. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1942. Before enlisting in the army she worked as a nutritionist at hospitals in Akron, Ohio and St. Paul, Minnesota. She enlisted in the Army in 1945 and served in the Medical Corps, Pacific theater during and immediately after WWII, including a year in occupied Japan, as well as with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. After her Army service she earned a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan in 1950. Marjorie then moved to Murray, Kentucky and worked six years as a public health nutritionist in western Kentucky. In 1956, she returned to Ann Arbor, Michigan where she taught nutrition at the School of Nursing, The University of Michigan until her retirement in 1981. Marjorie had many hobbies to enjoy after retirement including sewing, cooking, woodworking and carpentry, and gardening, including Project Grow. Volunteer activities were with Turner Geriatric Services and Neighborhood Senior Services and at St Thomas church. She believed in the importance of education and encouraged her nieces and nephews in their educational goals. In the spring of 2009, she took up residence at St. Therese in New Hope, Minnesota. Marjorie is survived by nephew, Tom (Marilyn) Brink; niece, Kathy (Ray) Konti; sisters-in-law, Ardelle and Muriel Murphy; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, J. B., Loren, Leo, and Donald Murphy and sister, Iona Brink. Her funeral mass will be at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 530 Elizabeth St. in Ann Arbor, Michigan at 10:30 AM, Saturday, 28 August 2010. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Therese Care Center, 8000 Bass Lake Rd. New Hope, Minnesota on Friday, 3 September 2010 at 10:30 AM. Her interment will be at 1 PM at Ft.
