Marian Porter

Porter, Marian Rae of Ridge Pointe, in Minnetonka, MN, was born on January 29, 1912, and passed away on Monday, September 13, 2010, after a short illness. She is survived by her son, Judge Charles A. Porter, Jr., her daughter-in-law Sandra Oakes, both of Minnetonka, MN; her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Betsey) Porter of Bloomington and Sarah Porter of San Francisco, CA and her most loved cousin, Bettye Olson of St. Paul. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Charles A. Porter, who died in 2002; her parents, Arthur P. and Alice D. Wandtke of Sister Bay, WI; her brother, Arthur P. Wandtke, Jr. of San Francisco, CA; her sister-in- law, Dorothy P. Isom of Pasadena, CA and her brother-in-law, William L. Porter of Lincoln, NE. Rae was born in Chicago, IL and lived much of her youth in Evanston, IL. She graduated from Senn High School and from the Sherwood School of Music where she studied piano and voice. She worked as the administrative assistant to the President of the Pure Oil Company, now a part of Citgo/ Phillips/Union Oil, and it was there that she met her future husband who was then a young chemical engineer. Shortly after their marriage in 1939, they moved to New York City, where he was part of America's Synthetic Rubber Committee designing a response to the seizure of the Philippine natural rubber plantations by the Empire of Japan. After a stay in Galveston, TX for this project, and the armistice, they returned to Evanston and shortly thereafter settled in Crystal Lake, IL. They eventually moved to Summit, NJ and then to Barrington, IL, before retiring to the farm house in Sister Bay, Door County, WI, where they resided for 17 years. In 1995, they relocated to Minnetonka to be near the grandchildren and family. Rae devoted her life to volunteer work, beginning during the war with the American Women's Volunteer Service and continuing through the American Red Cross, the Cub and Boy Scouts, and Women's Clubs in Evanston, Crystal Lake, Barrington and Sister Bay. She was the founding President of the Scand Hospital and Care Facility Auxiliary of Sister Bay, and of the Sister Bay Hospital Auxiliary. Her most important contributions were to the Illinois Children's Home and Aid, on whose Board she served for many years and from whose services she and Charles adopted their son in 1946. She was a member of the First Church of Christian Science of Evanston, IL, the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake, and the Moravian Church of Sister Bay. At her request, no services will be held. She will be buried with her mother's family in Memorial Park, Skokie, IL, at a later date. Memorials preferred to Illinois Children's Home and Aid, 125 South Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60606, or to the Animal Humane Society of Golden Valley in memory of the cat, Hogan. For many years, through the deaths of all generations of her relatives, she carried the following anonymous verse: "Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow; I am diamond glints on snow. I am sunlight on ripened grain; I am the gentle autumn's rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft star that shines at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry.
