Lucy Marie Velner

Lucy Marie Velner blessed all who knew her during her 23 years of life. Lucy was born on August 21, 2002, to Tim Velner and Kathleen Hartmann (Velner) in Minneapolis, MN. Lucy attended Edina elementary and middle school and graduated from Edina High School in Spring of 2021. Lucy was registered at the University of St. Thomas in Fall, 2026, to finish her remaining college classes, studying Psychology, and planning to go on for a nursing degree. Lucy wanted to work in healthcare as she loved to help people. Lucy was an accomplished swimmer, lettering on Edina High School Varsity Swim Team and winning the Team Spirit Award while swimming with the Edina Gators for many years. She loved teaching swim lessons where often the kids and parents made special request for Lucy to be their teacher. Lucy was silly, had a contagious laugh, and all who knew her loved her so much! Lucy was an incredible big sister to Cecilia Rose Velner (21) and Vincent Edward Velner (19) and was a loving and silly daughter to Tim and Kathleen. Tim and Lucy particularly enjoyed picking on Kathleen relentlessly and laughing with Lucy's great laugh as they made fun of Kathleen. Lucy loved dolphins. In her short 23 years, she swam with the dolphins 5 different times! Lucy loved quiet time at the cabin, boat rides, hot tubbing, and was always listening to music. At age 15, Lucy's mental health challenges began. We worked hard as a family for eight years to understand Lucy's illness and support her with coping skills. On June 29, 2026, Lucy decided to end her life. Lucy is survived by her parents, Tim Velner and Kathleen Hartmann (Velner) sister Cecilia Rose Velner, brother Vincent Edward Velner, Maternal Grandfather George Hartmann, Paternal Grandmother Mary Seymour, Aunt Michelle Hartmann Puryear (Matt) (Claire and Caroline Puryear), Uncle Michael Hartmann (George, Maximus, Callaway Hartmann and Evelyn Hartmann McCormick) Uncle Stephen Velner (Teri) (Henry, Mary, Charlie, Frank Velner) Aunt Sara Mason (Mark) (Lindsey, Matthew, Michael and Casey Mason) and Aunt Katy Rodeighier (Brian) (Ben, Emma and Adam Rodeigher). Lucy was very close to her friends, including some of her closest; Megan. Yassin, Theresa, Lily, Jaden and Jack. Lucy is proceeded in death by her loving Grandmother Sharon Rose Biebel Hartmann, her Grandfather Richard Edward Velner and her step Grandfather McNeil Seymour. Many of you have contacted us asking how you can provide support. Over the last few days. Tim, Cecilia, Vincent, and Kathleen have been talking about finding ways to keep Lucy's memory alive through service to others. We explored existing charities and while there are many great options, we decided to establish The Lucy Marie Velner Foundation. The Foundation mission will be focused on increasing awareness of mental health in young adults and supporting parents. We will create a formal 501c3 shortly but did not have time prior to this publishing.
