Lloyd "Bud" Sorem

Sorem, Lloyd S. "Bud" Age 89 of Edina, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family January 5, 2011. Born in Mpls December 10, 1921. Preceded in death by parents, Severt and Mabel Sorem; Marian Sorem; son, Mel; sisters, Alta, Alva, Sylvia and brother, Mel. Survived by loving partner of 31 years, Florence Hargarten; children, Terry (Linda), Val Sorem, Ron (Sheryl) and Julie (Rick) Wineberg; grandchildren, Erik, Chris, Jenni, Jeff, Kalli, Blake, Brett, Trent, Crystal, Courtney, Jenna, and Alyssa; 7 great-grandchildren; and nephews. Bud graduated from Mpls Central HS in 1939 where he played varsity football and basketball. He served in the Navy during WWII aboard the attack transport U.S.S. Minifee in the South Pacific. After the war he graduated from MN School of Business. His love of sales lead him into owning Famous Foods - a fruit, produce and poultry distribution company. In 1953 he started his own food brokerage company - L.S. Sorem & Assoc, which he ran until his retirement in 1996. Starting with one product line his company grew to the largest food brokerage company in the Midwest. His love and dedication for kids and sports. He was one of the early leaders of the Edina Hockey Association. He was also involved with Edina Youth Football and Baseball in the 1960's. He coached Edina traveling Bantam hockey teams starting in 1962 until the mid 70's, where he coached teams to 2 state championship titles and one national title. He was part of a group that was instrumental in the development and building of Braemar Arena. In 2005 he was inducted into the Edina H.S. Hall Of Fame. He was very active - the original jogger - he played tennis and golf was a longtime member at Edina Country Club. He enjoyed boating with family and friends. A special thanks to NC Little staff for making dad's last hours so peaceful and comforting. Visitation Wednesday 5-7 PM at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, West 50th St. & Hwy 100. Funeral service Thursday, 11 AM with visitation 1 hour prior at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, 50th and Knox Ave S. Interment Fort Snelling Cemetery. Memorials preferred to NC Little Hospice of Edina.
