Leon Edmund Simon

Simon, Leon "Red", age 90, Roseville, MN and formerly of Cold Spring, MN, passed away on Dec. 1 of Covid-19. After high school Leon joined the Navy, where he served on the USS Greenwich Bay during the Korean War. He loved serving his country and the opportunity to see the world. He spent the next several years raising his family and working in the insurance industry. Leon was a member of American Legion Post 542 and VFW Post 577, and was a dedicated and active member of the Fort Snelling Memorial Rifle Squad for over 20 years. This was something he was very passionate about, as he wanted to make sure every serviceman was given a proper military funeral. Members of the Rifle Squad spend many hours, in every kind of weather, to ensure this. Leon believed in helping others in many ways, including being a regular blood donor, and a CPR instructor for several years. He lived a very full life to the end, filled with adventure and love. He made the world a better place for so many with his great stories, kindness, and his love of fun. He loved his family, nature, camping, travel, and his many close friends. Every weekday morning he attended 8:00 mass and the following coffee clutch with other attendees. This may have been to make for the nightly happy hour with his condo buddies. Leon is preceded in death by his sisters Dorothy Schouviller and Eileen Jonas, and longtime companion Luella Arth. He is survived by children Carol Newell (Andrew), Lisa Simon, Jerry Simon, and Teresa Simon (Derek Battey); 5 grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren an one Great, Great Grandchild; brother Melvin (Doc) Simon, and sister Milly Schoen, as well as many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Odilia Catholic Church, 3495 Victoria St., Shoreview, MN at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 with visitation 9:30 AM at church. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
