Lee Allan Hanley

Hanley, Lee Allan born March 12, 1936 in Faribault, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2016. Preceded in death by parents John and Theresa, wife Ellen, and siblings Joseph and Rita. Lee was a graduate of Bethlehem Academy in Faribault in 1954 and St. John's University in 1958 with a degree in English. Lee joined the staff at St. John's University in 1959 after serving as an ROTC second lieutenant. His distinguished 40 year career at St. John's began as an English instructor. Lee followed his passion in politics in the mid-60s, moving to Washington DC to work in Congress where he met his future wife Ellen. Lee returned to St. John's in 1971 where his positions included Vice President of University Relations and News Services Supervisor. He was founding Editor of the St. John's Alumni Magazine, a role he continued for 30 years. A favorite contribution was a photography class he taught for 15 years. Lee was selected as the St. John's University Outstanding Administrator of the year in 1992, and he received the University's Distinguished Alumnus Award shortly before an initial retirement in 1997. From 2002-2012, Lee was invited to come out of retirement to work part time for St. John's Abbey. Lee found particular joy developing & coordinating the annual Swayed Pines Folk Fest for 25 years, an event which drew fiddlers, folk music performers, artists, and nationally renowned musicians to St. John's. Lee had many passions in life including photography, woodworking. He was a founding member of an International Cooking Club that began with a group of friends four decades ago and continues to this day. Lee loved spending as much time as possible at his lake cabin in Nevis Minnesota. Lee cherished the many deep and lifelong relationships with friends, classmates, colleagues, students. His mentoring enhanced the lives of many. Lee is loved and will be missed by his partner Mary Korman; siblings Richard (Phyllis) and Dennis (Pat); children Kathleen (Gordy), Jim (Michelle), Sean (Jennifer) and Mark (Chaehyun); grandchildren Alika, Logan, Ben, and Alexander; his many friends. Funeral Service at 3:00 PM Thursday Oct. 20 with visitation beginning at 2:00 PM, St. John's Abbey Church, Collegeville, MN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to SJU student scholarship funds or the St. John's Abbey.
