Lewis, LaVerne (Slagel) Longtime resident of Edina, LaVerne passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord on April 13, 2010, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family in her home at the age of 79. Preceded in death by her beloved parents, John and Amy Slagel, LaVerne will remain lovingly in the hearts of her family whom she cherished deeply: her husband, Gordy Lewis, with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage last July; her children, Mary Sullivan (Scott), Stephanie Thomas (Tony), and John Lewis (Lisa); and her grandchildren who lit up her life, Michael, Keri, and Kathleen Sullivan; Andy, Joe, and Billy Thomas; Jack, Christopher, Katie, Nicholas, and Danny Lewis. After graduating from the Academy of Holy Angels, she attended Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, earned a BA in Spanish from the College of St. Catherine and an MA in Spanish from the University of Minnesota. Throughout her life, LaVerne generously shared her time and talents with others. Through her long dedication to the Church of St. Patrick, she lectored, taught religious education, counseled engaged couples, and served on the wedding committee for over 20 years. She and Gordy introduced Contact, a high school youth program, to St. Patrick's. LaVerne also used her Spanish skills to help those around her: teaching Spanish at Holy Angels, translating English into Spanish for a weekly newsletter for Risen Christ School, teaching Spanish in Community Education, and teaching basic Spanish to a group of St. Patrick's parishioners headed to Guatemala. LaVerne centered her life around her faith, family, and friends. Throughout her illness, LaVerne continuously remarked at how blessed she had been. She cherished deep friendships, many of which spanned decades. She and Gordy loved to travel, and they shared adventures all over the world. LaVerne's family invites you to celebrate her inspirational life. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Friday, April 16, at The Church of St. Patrick, Valley View at Gleason Rd., Edina. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 AM Saturday, April 17, also at The Church of St. Patrick. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights.
