Kurt Fredrick Walther

Kurt F. Walther, Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in the company of his wife Nancy on December 19, 2024. He is survived and missed by his wife, Nancy Hall, brother Tom, children Ann, Jill (Kroll), Paul, Kevin and Craig (McClurg), grandchildren David, Thomas, Melanie, Jack, Brett, Bill, Levi, Taylor and Marissa, and great-grandchildren Aidan, Avery, Quinn, and Tessa, as well as countless friends, colleagues, co-volunteers and parishioners. He is preceded in death by his brother Bill and sister Juone. Kurt was born in Minneapolis on September 19, 1930, attended Roosevelt High School, served in the Korean War, received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Minnesota, and practiced law in Minneapolis. He was a Senior Partner at Peterson, Bell, Converse and Jensen, specializing in workers compensation and labor law. Kurt lived a life of service; to his family, his friends, his country, and his community. He participated in the Big Brother program, strove to use his professional abilities to serve working people, taught reading and participated in countless forms of volunteering with faith groups; from donations to building houses in Mexico. His love for nature and the sense of peace it provided led him not just to seek time in those natural places but advocate for the preservation and accessibility to wild places for as many Americans as possible. His photographs showed the reverence and delight with which he viewed the largest mountain; the smallest, most fragile flower petal; sharing what he saw. He traveled the world, always fascinated by different cultures, open to new experiences, as excited by a dish he had never tried or a dance he had never seen as he was visiting the great places and landmarks of Europe. Even at home when he met someone from another country, he would be interested in where a person came from; what he could learn about that place. As a father, Kurt shared his love of music, science, nature, and silliness, leading marches around the basement, singing along with his guitar, or pointing out something on a walk through the woods. When his children were grown he loved spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, taking them on trips, teaching them new games, and going for walks. Visitation 4-7 PM on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at Washburn-McReavy Shoreview Chapel; 515 Highway 96 W., Shoreview, MN. Memorial service Friday, January 3, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church; 2136 Carter Ave., St. Paul, MN. A luncheon will follow the service. Interment Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.
