Manick, Kenneth P., MD Dr. Manick passed away on May 28, 2015 at the age of 87. Preceded in death by his wife, Jane. Jane was the love of his life for 60 years. Survived by daughters, Sherri Lynn Manick, Gig (Woody) Ginkel; sister, Mary Lemieux; grandchildren, Jenner (Mark) Stevens, Brian (Erica) Ginkel; great-grandchildren, Jonah and Olivia Stevens, Goldie and Grayson Ginkel; nieces and nephew. Ken was a graduate of Washburn High School. He joined the Army National Guard in 1950. His unit was called up during the Korean War and he was then stationed in Alabama. Upon returning from active duty, he unfortunately contracted polio. After successful treatment, he continued his undergraduate studies at the U. of Minnesota graduating in 1956 and entered medical school. President of the 1960 graduating class in medicine, Dr. Manick ranked first in his class. While in medical school, he was the president of the Medical Student Council. Among his other honors is an Outstanding Achievement Award in Medicine and Surgery from the Southern Minnesota Association, the Ebin J. Carey Memorial Award in Anatomy in his freshman year and a Certificate of Merit from the Minnesota Alumni Association. In 1959 he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. He was a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity Ken went into private practice for 10 years while also teaching part-time. He left that practice to become a full-time faculty member at the U of M Medical School. He was a professor of dermatology and directed the undergraduate teaching program in dermatology. He was also the Chief of Dermatology service at the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Hospital which was a teaching affiliate of the Medical School. He was a past president of the Medical Alumni Association and the Minnesota Dermatological Society. In 1974 he was awarded a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Minnesota Medical Foundation. This was an award given to that teacher selected by students from the many practicing physicians who taught in the Medical School. He was best known for his caring spirit with all his patients during private practice and his teaching ability at the U. He never treated diseases, he treated people. He would often charge patients with little financial resources according to their ability to pay. He always taught the importance of shaking a patient's hand upon introduction. Some of his medical students chose the dermatology profession because of Ken's teaching skills and affable manner. A fellow dermatologist and former student, John Bergman, writes, "Dr. Manick was my mentor, encourager, and cheerleader. His most significant influence on my medical career was not all of the academic and procedural things we were so focused on during my three year residency, but he modeled and taught me how to be a real doctor. He taught me to CARE for each patient". He enjoyed biking, boating, and swimming as a young man. He carried a 5 HP motor in the trunk of his car in case an opportunity arose. He loved road trips and Sunday drives with his family. A special thanks must be given to Dr. Timothy Gavin and the staff at Fairview Southdale Hospital.
