Benson, Ken In Loving Memory: Celebrating the Life of a Musical Proud American Ken Benson, a man of profound talents, patriotism, and kindness, bid farewell to this world on July 19, 2023. Born in 1931, he graced our lives with his presence for 91 years, carrying the cultural pride of his Swedish ancestry and leaving behind a legacy that will resonate with us forever. A dedicated patriot from an early age, Ken served his country with immense pride, embarking on a musical journey as a member of the esteemed army military band. He performed for countless soldiers and civilians alike, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie during his time of service. Ken had a profound love for music that extended far beyond his military service. Throughout his life, he showcased his musical gift by playing in several bands with a variety of instruments including piano, accordion, concertina, trombone, harmonica, and euphonium to name a few, all self-taught and without need for sheet music. He often delighted family and friends with impromptu music at social gatherings. Following his honorable discharge, Ken channeled his passion for entrepreneurship by establishing the highly successful commercial construction company Benson-Orth. Through his work, he played a significant role in shaping the landscape of his community through 40+ buildings, including those for Edinburgh Golf Club and HOM Furniture Stores. His commitment to excellence and integrity served as an inspiration to many in the industry. Outside of his professional life, Ken was an active and enthusiastic member of the Shriners organization. He dedicated time and resources to numerous charitable causes close to his heart, allowing him to make a positive impact on the lives of many, especially children in need of medical care. As an accomplished golfer, Ken achieved the extraordinary feat of four holes-in-one in his lifetime. Three of those under his 45-year membership at Golden Valley Country Club in Minnesota and scoring his 4th at the age of 83 in California. Beyond the green, he embraced the call of the wild with enthusiasm. Ken relished the thrill of hunting large game animals and found tranquility in the art of fishing. A wanderer at heart, Ken had a deep love for travel and embraced every opportunity to explore the world. With Lorraine, their journeys were filled with cultural experiences and genuine connections with people from different walks of life. Ken invited beloved companions into all these adventures throughout his life. And, of course, no story of Ken's life would be complete without acknowledging his passion for ice cream. Any day. Every day. The sweetness of this treat mirroring the sweetness he brought to others. Ken was our ice cream. Despite his many accomplishments, Ken remained remarkably humble and kind-hearted. He possessed a rare warmth and empathy that endeared him to everyone he encountered. His generosity knew no limits, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. The love he gave was returned to him in abundance, as he was cherished and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Ken is preceded in death by his siblings Dorothy Jensen and Robert Benson, youngest son Kenny Benson and daughter-in-law Kathy O'Connell and survived by his loving wife and caregiver Lorraine Benson, sons Doug Benson and Richard Benson, daughter Terry Benson (John Popp), step-daughter Lisa Henry (Tom Kielb), step-son Jason (Tanya) Roberts, as well as 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 12th at Washburn-McReavy the Edina Chapel (5000 West 50th & MN-10, Edina, MN 55436) with a 1 pm visitation, 2 pm service, and reception to follow on site.
