Ken W. Sackett

Ken W. Sackett was born on October 5, 1917 in St. Paul, MN. He graduated from Central High School in 1935 and a 1939 forestry graduate from the U of MN. He went to work in a lumberyard in Rushford and then in Austin, MN. From Austin he volunteered for the Army. Ken was sent to the 4th Calvary in South Dakota. He went from South Dakota to OCS (Officer Candidate School) at Fort Bellvoire, Virginia. On graduation in July, 1942 from OCS, Ken became a 2nd Lieutenant and was sent to Camp Hood, Texas. Before he went to Texas, he went home on leave and married the love of his life, Doris L. Ovrom on August 8th, 1942. Ken went on to Camp Hood joining the 249th Combat Engineers and went to England. He was in the Battle of the Bulge as a 1st Lieutenant and in charge of the headquarters unit of the 249th. He was later transferred to the 178th Engineers and became a major. In 1945, he returned home to Minnesota. On August 12, 1947, he and Doris had their first daughter, Sandra Kay and on October 12, 1950 their second daughter, Linda Lee. Ken was the Commander of the 5042 Reserve School at Fort Snelling for 11 years, finally retiring from the Army in 1972 as a full Colonel. His two week "vacations" for many years was as an instructor at Army Reserve Camps. In his civiian life, Ken first worked as the superintendent on many building projects. He began to work and manage the Lexington Lumber Company on Lexington and Frost. After many years there, he left to become an insurance agent with New England Life Insurance, where Ken worked until he retired. After retiring, he was in charge of many projects around the house and picking up his grandson, Chris, after school everyday when Chris was in Middle and High School. He enjoyed mowing at home and at the lake cabin and kept a pristine lawn. Ken's loves included family and whatever made them happy, watching his grandson play any sport, friends, the lake, Viking's football, taking care of or complaining about the dogs, and telling a good story and/or joke. He loved to talk and visit. He will forever be missed. Survived by wife, Doris; daughters, Sandra Sackett and Linda (Wayne) Lundeen; grandson, Christopher Lundeen; nieces, nephews and many friends. Memorial Service 7:00PM Monday, September 13 with a gathering from 6:00PM until the time of service at Presbyterian Church of the Way, 3382 N. Lexington Avenue, Shoreview. Private interment. Memorials preferred to Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota or Presbyterian Church of the Way.
