Kathryn Louise Mesenbourg

Kate 'Kathy' Louise Mesenbourg (Dotray), 75, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, August 18th, 2026. Upon her death, our mom and mama, Grandma Kathy, sister Kath, and beloved Chanky, was reunited with her mom, Lucy Dotray; her dad, John Dotray; and her brother, Dave Dotray, and many beloved family pets. She is deeply missed by her daughters, Lindsey and Shannon (DJ); her grandkids, Henrietta and Franklin; her siblings, John Dotray, Jessie Bappe, Mary Baquero, Joe Dotray, Pete Dotray, Therese Tulloch, and Tom Dotray; and their families. Born on Thursday, May 24, 1951 in Minneapolis, Kate was the first of what would become nine children for John and Lucy Dotray. She grew up as the independent yet dependable eldest daughter in a bustling love-filled Kingfield home rooted in South Minneapolis and Incarnation Catholic Church. She helped Lucy run the household, got up to mischief with her neighborhood friends and siblings, and built what would become some of her most treasured friendships of her life with her sisters. Kate's life cannot be captured by a single role, interest, or place. She moved through the world as a daughter, sister, mom, grandma, friend, worker, traveler, gardener, athlete, beauty, and fighter, each part of her making the others richer. Being part of "The Three Musketeers" with her girls, Lindsey and Shannon, was the role that came closest to defining her. She beamed whenever all three were together, and, right up to her final days, she reminded them how important it was to her that they be together, the Three Musketeers. From the earliest recollections Kate's eye for fashion and sense of style were undisputable. Her hair was always on the latest trend, with outfits to match (yes those legendary short skirts included), and she even worked as a fashion model. Her fashion and style complemented the beauty she always carried, right up until she left us. Her sense of style extended to her homes where her knack for decor always made every space inviting, homey, and unmistakably her. Kate also loved entertainment, movies, musicals, music, sports, all of it. She was an aficionado on all topics, keeping up with the current news happening out of the exciting entertainment world. Kate certainly adored being on a red carpet, with a charming devilish look in her eyes, she had no problem approaching movie stars and cracking a witty, sometimes inappropriate, comment their way. While she was an entertainment and style icon, she was also deep, sensitive, sporty, outdoorsy, and a tomboy. She was a basketball player full of stories of how girls could only play half court and were not allowed to dribble. Her childhood was filled with neighborhood kickball games, backyard swimming and ice rinks on Pleasant, and camping trips to Sibley State Park, where the Dotray's packed into 'Big Blue' to start one of the family's most treasured traditions. That spirit continued into motherhood where she was the number one fan for her kids' and grandkids' sports, musicals, concerts and regular camping trips continued right up until this past year. Kate loved being near the water. Whether she was sitting by an ocean or at one of her beloved local lakes - Lake Harriet, Lake Nokomis, Lake of the Isles, Bde Maka Ska -the water was a calming presence for her. She enjoyed countless memories with her family in those settings. As her daughters Lindsey and Shannon grew in their own lives and careers, Kate visited or joined them in many incredible places over the years. She loved to travel, and doing so with her daughters brought her so much joy. Paris, London, Spain, San Diego, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Oregon, Seattle and many National Parks, to name just a few. Kate lit the flame of desire for travel and curiosity in her daughters, teaching them a "you only live once" attitude when planning childhood adventures and opening their eyes to the enormity of the world and new cultures. Family Christmas trips to Disney World, Universal Studios, Mexico, and road trip adventures gave her girls irreplaceable memories, the best kind of fiscal irresponsibility, and yearning to carry on with that spirit forward for life. Kate loved many things, but gardening may have been at the top. Wherever she lived, she found space to nurture beautiful flowers, from her massive garden on Russell, to beautiful planters on the back deck on Pleasant, to this spring when she planted pots for her kids to make sure her favorite flowers had a home. Even knowing it was putting her gardens at risk, Kate also loved feeding the birds and squirrels. She cherished her morning routine: brewing a hot cup of black coffee, watering and pruning her flowers, filling her bird feeders, and then sitting back to soak it all in. Throughout her life, Kate was the definition of someone who never met a stranger. Her quick, beautiful, infectious smile, sharp sense of humor, love of laughter, openness, and charisma brought people to her and kept her surrounded by love. She had the fortune of having several great loves in her lifetime, along with motherhood, sisterhood, and becoming a grandma, she loved love itself. While she was content being independent, she spent the most laughter-filled years of her life alongside her partner Fred. From school days to her career, right up to the bonds she formed with her wonderful care teams in hospitals or at Mount Olivet, it was a gift to watch people gravitate to her and hear the laughter that would inevitably follow. While she loved people, Kate also loved to be independent, forge her own path, and enjoy time to herself - particularly in nature. She treasured the simple ritual of drinking a cup of hot black coffee and writing in her journal. Some of her most precious memories were times she could savor the quiet sanctuary spaces she created in her own backyard or down by Lake Harriet. Her career spanned early days as a stay-at-home mom, going back to school to work on her associates degree, taking classes at night while raising her daughters and working. The majority of her career was with FMC/United Defense/BAE. She worked her way up from human resources to the organization's event planner. She used her creativity and outgoing nature to plan parties, golf tournaments, charity events, and massive shows of military equipment on the National Mall in Washington DC. Her work took her to military bases around the country and overseas. Kate spent her last working chapter at Baquero Law Office alongside family and friends focused on immigration, which provided her with both friendships and a sense of purpose for the work she found so important. Most recently Kate spent her time gardening, feeding and watching the birds, reading, watching movies and sports, doing crafts, looking through photos, traveling, road-tripping, camping with her daughters and grandkids, and being the best 'gramma Kathy' there could ever have been for nearly 10 years. What Kate loved most in the final years of her life was being Grandma Kathy to Henrietta and Franklin. She spent time with them in Seattle and Bainbridge, and the most magical summers with them on Pleasant. She passed on her loves of gardening, baking, playing games, sleepovers, popcorn eating, and camping. Road trips together were the most memorable, from treks to and from Seattle, to Joshua Tree, Michigan, and the Oregon Coast. She was a constant part of their lives and shared any and every moment she could with them. The time they had together filled her heart and theirs more than words could ever articulate. Kate took chances and pushed boundaries, which led to her incredible ability to bounce back from setbacks, often with remarkable grace. She was a fighter and did not give up on things that mattered to her, something her two daughters are proud to be a testament to. Her road in life was not always smooth, but looking back, she was proud of her time as a single mom, of making her lifelong dream of owning a cabin come true, and of being able to travel and see the world. Up until the day she died she remained defiant against medical challenges far too great for one person. Having the chance to reflect with Kate was a privilege, and it gives us certainty that she was proud of her life, her strength, and knew just how loved she was. Kate's funeral service will be on Monday August 31st, 2026 at Lakewood Cemetery's Memorial Chapel. The visitation begins at 9am, with the service at 10am, followed by her graveside service at 11am. Kate has requested that those that can attend join in celebrating her life by wearing yellow to the service, and that any flowers please be colorful to celebrate her vibrant eye for style and love of gardening. The family is hosting a celebration of her life luncheon following the service at Lake Harriet's Beards Plaisance (46th and Upton Ave South), where we will have a chance to share stories and photos of her beautiful life. Knowing Kate's life was too short, we are also asking that, if you have any stories to share, you include them in the virtual guest book from Washburn-McReavy, in hopes that Kate's grandkids can someday hear all the stories she would have told them herself.
