Kathryn Augusta Berntson

Age 91 of New Brighton. Died September 12, 2019 Born April 3, 1928 to Reverend and Mrs. Ernest (Myrtle) Nelson in Willmar, MN. Survived by Children: Luanne (Paul) Rynders, Debra (John) Nelson; Daughter-in-law, Shelly Arndt Berntson; and nine grandchildren, Daniel Rynders, Brent Rynders, Nathan Rynders, Kathryn Rynders, Jared Nelson, Bryce Nelson, Isaac Nelson, Grace Nelson, and Angela Arndt, Brother: Charles Nelson; Sister: Lynn (Darrel) Kenops; 7 nieces and nephews and one great nephew. Preceded in Death by husband: Harlan L. Berntson and Son: Steven C. Berntson. As the daughter of a minister, Kathryn moved many times during her formative years. Carlton, MN; South Isanti, MN; Kiwanee, IL and Barnum, MN were the towns on her life journey until she entered Bethel Academy in the fall of 1945. Following her Bethel experience, she took a clerical position in Chicago, IL where she enjoyed many adventures including music by Nat King Cole and the comedy of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Experiencing life there gave her a love for Big Band Music.In 1951, on a trip back to Lengby, MN for her parent's 25th wedding anniversary, she met her husband, Harlan, where he was the moderator of her father's church. They were married on October 16, 1954. Kathryn loved to spend time with her family. She was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. NASCAR racing was a sport she really enjoyed with her son, Steve. A longtime member of GracePoint/Salem church in New Brighton, she had a heart for hospitality and children's ministries. She loved volunteering at church, baking, knitting, scrapbooking, visits to the lake, babies, animals, and birds. She loved to travel to Idaho to see her siblings, to Sweden to visit relatives in 1998, the Smokey Mountains, and many cruises including: Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Panama Canal. She enjoyed the Gaither's music, the Booth Brothers, the Collingsworth family and Alan Jackson to name a few. Meaningful conversations with people, hearing stories of their lives, and making personal connections was a source of great joy for her. Funeral service 11AM Monday, September 23 (visitation begins at 10AM) at GRACEPOINT, 2351 Rice Creek Road, New Brighton. Interment Isanti Union Cemetery.
