Kathleen (a/k/a Katy) Murphy Komarek

Komarek, Kathleen (a/k/a Katy) Murphy, age 84, of Minneapolis MN, died peacefully of pancreatic cancer on February 7, 2015, surrounded by her children. Katy was born in Winona Minnesota on August 29, 1930, the youngest child of Leo F. Murphy and Molly Brady Murphy. Preceded in death by husband Raymond A. Komarek, her parents, siblings Leo F. Murphy Jr. and Roseanne Kronick. She is survived by her sister, Molly Pettinger, her six children Luke (Stacey); Peter (Lisa); Daniel (Ruth); Andrew; Martha Friedel (Jim) and Matthew as well as eight grandchildren, Laura Komarek, Sally Komarek, Brady Komarek, Nelson Komarek, Tess Komarek, Marli Komarek, Ford Friedel and Abigail Friedel. Katy grew up in Winona Minnesota, the daughter of a prominent judge and a kind, loving mother of high character who was active in the community. She attended Winona High School graduating in 1948 and attended St. Catherine's College and then attended the University Minnesota, graduating with a degree in journalism in 1952. While attending St. Kate's she met the love of her life Raymond Arthur Komarek, affectionately known as "RAK". Katy and Ray were married in July 1952 and raised six children in St. Paul. They were active members of the Nativity Parish. Katy and Ray were also longtime members of the St. Paul Tennis Club and she continued to play tennis until just a few years ago. She was also an avid swimmer and made many friends at the Uptown YWCA over the last two decades, following the move from St. Paul to Minneapolis. She became an active member of The Basilica of St. Mary Parish volunteering Mondays for the St. Vincent DePaul shoe ministry. She had many interests and was very independent. She loved books, movies, music, good food and Masterpiece Theatre. She traveled extensively and enjoyed visiting museums and theaters. She was a doting grandmother who loved attending sports, music, and theater activities involving her grandchildren. She left many friends behind from all aspects of her life and she will be sorely missed. Visitation from 4-7 on Wed. 2/11/15 at Washburn-McReavy Chapel, 2301 DuPont Avenue South, Mpls. MN 55405. The family welcomes you to a Mass of Christian burial on Thur. 2/12/15 at noon at the Basilica of St. Mary, 88 North 17th Street, Mpls. MN 55403. Visitation one hour prior. Memorials preferred to St. Vincent DePaul Shoe Ministry c/o The Basilica. Private interment.
