June Sandnes Lowry Orlich, formerly of Grimes, IA, passed away January 7, 2017 in Shoreview, MN at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents, Soren Sandnes and Rosina Johansson Sandnes; husbands, Leland Lowry and Duchan Orlich; brothers, Norman and Leroy Sandnes; sister, Bernice Reiher; daughter-in-law, Susan Lowry; and great-grandson, Beckett Podominick. June is survived by her children, James Randal Lowry (Maria)of Las Vegas, NV, Scott Lowry of Kihei, HI and Jean (Charles) Podominick of Vadnais Heights, MN; grandchildren, Kevin Podominick, and Matthew (Tania) Podominick; and great-granddaughter, Tanielli Podominick. June was born in Chicago, IL January 5, 1922. After her father's death in 1926, she was raised in the Odd Fellows Children's home in Lincoln, IL. June was employed for many years at Pioneer in Johnston/ Des Moines and the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in 1987. June was an accomplished pianist; giving lessons in her home for many years in Grimes; serving as Grimes Presbyterian church organist for over 20 years; and accompanying bands and churches as a Winter Texan in Mission. A lover of sports, June was an avid golfer, a faithful follower of the Iowa Hawkeyes and a lifelong (and long-suffering!) Chicago Cubs fan. Watching her Cubbies win the 2016 World Series was a long-awaited event! She also enjoyed playing bridge - at the Grimes Community Center and with her Friday Bridge Club. June always had a big welcoming smile for everyone she met. She was ahead of her time when it came to the treatment of women in the workplace and always stood up for decency and respect. She was a great role model for her children. The family thanks the caregivers of Shoreview Senior Living and the HealthPartners Hospice team for their quality care, dedication, and professionalism. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Grimes, IA, Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 11:00, where friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Private family burial will be held at the Grimes Sunny Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
