Judith Kathryn Russell

It is with great sorrow that we report the passing of Judith (Judy Kay) Russell on February 17, 2022. Judy is survived by her daughter Dawn (Karmen) Russell, sister Jane (David) Gjerdingen, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Judy was preceded in death by her husband Edward, parents William and Edith Ryan, sister Mary Lou Beckman, and brothers James, Robert, William, Franklin, and Jerome Ryan. Judy was born in Wabasha, Minnesota on October 23, 1942. Judy grew up on a farm in Millville, Minnesota and graduated from Faribault High School for the Deaf in 1961. Judy later graduated from Rochester Technical College and completed the Civil Service test. Judy dedicated her career to the Department of Veterans Affairs, where she worked until she retired. Judy married Edward Russell in 1978, they lived in North Minneapolis where they raised their daughter Dawn. Judy enjoyed spending time with her family and was always ready to lend a hand at weddings, birthdays, graduations, and funerals. Judy looked forward to camping with her sister's and niece's families on sunny summer weekends. Judy had a bit of a competitive streak; she loved playing cards and horse shoes, going to car races, attending her nieces' and nephews' sporting events, and cheering for local sports teams like the Lynx, Twins, and Vikings. Judy was also in a bowling league with her husband Ed. While residing at Ebenezer Senior Living, Judy tended garden, participated in the community's choir and theater troupe, and helped facilitate events for Ebenezer's deaf community. Judy was devoted to her Catholic faith and volunteered with the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis. Judy will be dearly missed by her friends and family. Services will be held on Saturday February 26, 2022 at the Basilica of Saint Mary's Minneapolis at 1:00pm with viewing/visitation at 12:00pm. A luncheon will follow the mass. The mass will also be live streamed at http://www.mary.org for those who are unable to attend in person.
