Joseph David Mullen, Born January 6, 1934 On Friday morning May 21, 2021, we lost our best friend and wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Joe Mullen. Joe was proud to have been born in Green Isle, MN, a beautiful small town, where he played short stop on the town team. He had very fond memories of attending Glencoe High School where he played football, basketball, baseball, and track. He graduated from St. Thomas, majoring in chemistry. Following graduation he married the love of his life and best friend Yvonne Hoffman in Olivia, MN. He then began graduate school at the U of M, graduating with a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He worked his whole career at General Mills at the James Ford Bell research center, retiring as a Senior Principle Scientist. Of his many patents and scientific papers he was most proud of his discoveries on the healthful properties of food fiber in whole grain cereals, collaborating on studies with the U of M to show that Cheerios lowered cholesterol. Joe and Yvonne delivered "Meals On Wheels" in Golden Valley and downtown Mpls. for many years. After moving downtown Mpls., they helped with "Families Moving Forward," making and serving evening meals at the Basilica of St. Mary, where they have been long-time members. Joe loved the land and the family built a lake cabin near Lutsen and managed the family farm in Green Isle where 4 generations can still play, laugh, work and create memories together for generations to come. He was preceded in death by parents James and Rose and siblings James, Sister James Theresa, John, Florence, and is survived by Rosemary. He is survived by his loving wife, of 65 years, Yvonne, who he had four children with, Joe (Marie), Madeleine, Andrew; Maureen (Todd), Catherine; Dan; Colleen (Tim), Eamon (Kelsey), Olivia, Jane, Evelyn; Tara (Tim), Rory, Reilly. Memorials preferred to Sharing and Caring Hands and The Basilica Legacy Society Mass of Christian burial to be held Thursday, May 27th at 10:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, MN. 88 17th Street No, MPLS, MN 55403 Service will also be available via live stream at https://mary.online.church Private placement at Gethsemane Cemetery immediately following the service.
