John Swon

Swon, John H. III Age 66, of Edina passed away September 2, 2008. Preceded in death by his parents John (Jack) H. Jr. and Abbie Swon of Pinehurst, NC. Survived by his wife of 43 years Lynn and son John H. Swon IV, brothers Jim (Cass) of Chapel Hill, NC, Jerry (Jane) of Mendham, NJ, and sister Suzanne Spengeman (Craig) of Asbury, NJ, sister-in-law Anne Rutledge (Anne Charity) of Edina, uncle Ellis "Doc" Swon (Kathy) of Webster City, IA, cousins Gary Swon (Linda) of Irvine, CA, Kyle Swon (Darcy) of Webster City, IA, Fred (Mary) Casey of Brainerd, MN, Sandy (Ed) Sheperd of Eden Prairie, MN, John Anderson of Greeley, CO., Deb Kraklau (Doug) of Brainerd, MN, numerous nieces and nephews, and "Moose". John was born in Des Moines, IA. He attended Hopkins High School and played varsity football and was the captain of the hockey team. He attended Hamline University where he continued to play hockey and joined Theta Chi Fraternity. After college he worked for Shopping Center Network in Bedford Park, IL, a division of 3M's National Advertising. When the company was sold to Lee Jeffries in New York City, he moved to New Jersey. Two years later he joined the College Division of National Life and Accident Company of Nashville, TN and moved back to Minnesota. He later started several companies in marketing and sales. John was a Trustee Emeritus of Hamline University. He served on the Board of Directors of the Minneapolis Chapter of the American Red Cross and as Chair of the Financial Development Committee. John was the Chair of Senate District 42 Republicans and a winner of The Crystal Eagle Award. He was a delegate to the 2000 Republican Convention in Philadelphia. John was a member of The Minikahda Club, Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, Minneapolis Rotary, Daybreakers, and Dunkers. Memorials to Piper Athletic Association of Hamline, 1536 Hewitt Ave MS A1795, St. Paul, MN 55104; Minneapolis Rotary Foundation, 650 Third Avenue South Suite 100, Minneapolis, MN 55402; or Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, 511 Groveland at Lyndale, Minneapolis, MN 55403. Memorial Service Saturday, October 4 at 10:30 am with a luncheon following at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church. Private interment at Lakewood Cemetery.
