John Mondati

Mondati, John age 86, of Rogers, formerly of St. Anthony, September 18. Although John died of congestive heart failure, his generosity and passionate spirit will live in our hearts forever. John was served proudly in the United States Army, Company 8 Engineer Combat Battalion, achieving a rank of Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from the U of M School of Pharmacy and went on to buy his own drug store, Uptown Drug, as well as Villa Maria Nursing Home, both in Minneapolis. After retiring from his businesses in 1986, he and his wife Kay (Howland) continued to be active in the community. John was well known for his love of plants and flowers, which he shared with so many people. In 2007, John started The John Mondati Foundation to provide grants to other nonprofit companies who promote alternative methods of health and wellness. The Foundation will continue John's philosophy and serve as another way to keep him with us. John moved to Diamondcrest Assisted Living in Rogers last fall. After a combination of traditional medicine, exercise, nursing care, alternative therapies, and good food, he gained the strength and energy to buy a townhouse in Rogers. Just 3 days before his death, John moved into the townhouse and proclaimed himself the king of his palace, looking excitedly forward to the next chapter of his life and planning how he could help people. What an extraordinary man... We extend our gratitude to so many people who helped John over the past 15 months, including the staff of Diamondcrest for caring for John and Chef Eric for feeding him so well; Crest View Nursing Home; Abbott Hospital; Seniors Choice at Home companions; Danny Mondati; Ralph Anderson; Lee Anderson; Cookie Zynda; Marvin Toeben; and Ned Holle. He was preceded in death by his parents Eugenio and Rose, his wife Kay, brothers Jimmy and Nat, sisters Delena (Catena) and Mary (Puncher), and many dear relatives and friends. John is survived by his twin brother Enrico (Ely, MN) and sister-in-law Betty (CA) as well as nieces and nephews: Sylvia Mondati (Mpls); Ray and Cathy Mondati (Ely); Rita Langteau (Mpls); Rosemary (Jim) Trez (CA); Michael (Lisa) Catena (MT); Joe (Marge) Langteau (TX); Tom Langteau (St. Paul); Mark (Mary) Lamey (Eden Prairie); Mary Jo Trader (OR); Susan (John) DeLeon (CA); Joanne (Alex) Ordonez (CA); Lisa Mondati (CA); Gloria (Larry) Moore (CA); David Mondati (CA); Carol (Bob) Gornik (Coon Rapids); many great-nieces and great-nephews; and many, many friends. We are all better people for having John in our lives. Visitation September 25 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm and funeral service September 26 at 11:00 am at Hillside Chapel, 2610 19th Ave NE, Minneapolis. Interment Hillside Cemetery. John's life was dedicated to helping others.
