John McQuay

McQuay, John Thomas Born in Bertha, MN in October 1948. Passed away February 1, 2008. John's courage and positive attitude carried him through five years and four months of cancer. He was preceded in death by parents, John Clinton and Ann Louise McQuay; and his sister, Mary Lou. John is survived by wife of 41 & 1/2 years, Dorothy; sons, John Patrick (Gloria) and their children Tyler Jay and Trevor Dillon, and son, Thomas Michael (Tracy) and their children Abagail Lynn and Amelia Jane. John was a truly loved husband, father, grandpa and Papa. He will be dearly missed by his family. John was so happy to be able to see and get to know his granddaughters which he treasured and to see his two grandsons grow up. John's siblings are Burnell (Bill) Miller, Charles B. (Ione), Susann Rae (Delroy) Winchester; and he has many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. John had a wonderful and exciting life, driving race cars, loving his horse "Willow Boy" which he proudly rode with the Zuhrah Shrine Horse Patrol and being part of the Masonic Organization which he joined in 1984, and the Zuhrah Shrine Center which he joined in 1985. He worked hard on the Divan for 9 years and was honored to become Zuhrah Potentate in the year 2005. John had a wonderful group of Shriners and friends which helped him to reach his goal of replacing the Mansion roof at Zuhrah before his year was over. It made him very proud to be a Shriner seeing everyone willing to help him with such a large project. John was also a member of Mpls Scottish Rite, York rite, Anoka Shrine Club, and Glenwood Shrine Club. John worked for Brigg's Transportation until 1980. He then opened his business, Tumbleweed Boots, Western Wear and Trailer Sales. The business was closed in 1998 when John went to work for Wagner's Greenhouse, Inc. as a driver going to Texas, Oklahoma, etc. He will be missed by so many loyal family members and friends who had said prayers for him daily for so many years. Thank you Dr. Cardamone from the Hubert Humphrey Cancer Center, Dr. Sielaff who was at the University of Minnesota when he did John's surgery, Dr. Henseler of Suburban Imaging and Dr. Riad Salem of Northwestern Hospital in Chicago, IL, all of you were a blessing to John during his illness and he was happy you were there for him. Memorials are preferred to family in lieu of flowers. Donations will be given to Zuhrah Ladies Auxiliary at the Mpls Shrine Hospital and the Zuhrah Shrine Transportation Fund. John will be laid to rest in the Oak Valley Cemetery by Wrightstown, MN, only 1/2 mile from his childhood farm home and the great memories which went with living in the rural area until he grew up. This will be later on Wednesday afternoon and all are welcome to join us if they wish. A celebration of life will be held at Zuhrah Shrine Center, 2540 Park Ave., Mpls Wednesday, 11 AM, with visitation 1 hour prior.
