John D. Johnson

Johnson, John Darrel age 74, of Blaine passed away May 7 of melanoma. Born in Clearbrook, MN, he married Ruth Ann Thompson in 1962. Preceded in death by mother, Dora Johnson; father Clarence Johnson; and brothers, Delbert, Jackie, Joey and Jerry. Survived by loving wife, Ruth; son, Brian (Krista) & children Olivia, Sven, and Bjorn; daughter, Brenda (John) Walther & children, Maya and Renata; 3 brothers, Juel (Gail), Jim (Jean) and Juane (Marge); 6 sisters, Jane Harvath, June Schumunk, Joyce Price, Joan (John) Smith, Jean Nelson and Janice Volstad. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Alair Quickstad, brother-in-law Vic (Elizabeth) Thompson, as well as a multitude of friends. John was a hard worker on farms, construction, and ore boats before joining the Army in 1956 where he served as a Paratrooper in the 82nd airborne division and in the military police. After the military, he dedicated 36 years to MTC. John was a mechanic and a union board member, later elected vice president of the Transit Union Local #1005, where he served for 22 years before retiring in 1996. John also served on the MSRS Pension Board and as a delegate to the Mpls Central Labor Union. After retirement he enjoyed driving and delivering motor homes across the USA. He especially enjoyed his 16 trips to Alaska! John was the GREATEST Grandpa ever, showering all five grandchildren with a love that can never be replaced, and will never be forgotten. Honored to be grandpa to many of our friends as well. John was a devoted husband, hunter, fisher, and fixer of everything and anything there was to fix. We thank the doctors and all the nurses at Hubert Humphrey Cancer Center and from Hospice services for all the compassionate care he received. Memorials to the Melanoma Research Foundation or Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Visitation at church 4-7pm Sunday, May 12 and one hour prior to service on Monday.
