John Robert Anderson

John Robert Anderson walked-off his final inning on July 26, 2026. Without pain, John went to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by adoring family, life-long friends and members of his beloved baseball community. John was born in Nashwauk, MN on May 16, 1955 to Leroy and Mary Ann Anderson. The Iron Range, or as he often referred to it, God's Country, was his training ground for a life full of accomplishments. Demoted to playing the triangle in band, he knew early on his future was not in music and his focus shifted to athletics. While a standout in basketball, football and baseball, his no-hitter at Nashwauk-Keewatin High School solidified his future in America's pastime. His baseball career continued to evolve as a walk-on for the University of Minnesota Gophers Baseball team for the 1974 season helmed by Dick Siebert. As a pitcher, John found himself throwing to Gopher teammate and future MLB Hall-of-Fame player, Paul Molitor and commented "I better get a degree". An arm injury ended John's playing career early and he transitioned to student manager, the only non-player to be voted MVP unanimously after a college World Series run nonetheless. John continued as student manager alongside legendary Dick Siebert, eventually becoming assistant coach under George Thomas. He took over as head coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers in 1981 and coached for 43 seasons, the longest tenure in University of Minnesota baseball history. Accolades that span decades include multiple Big Ten Coach of the Year awards, Regional Coach of the Year, Big Ten Titles, membership in the National Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, and appearances in the NCAA tournament. Recently he was honored as the recipient of the 2027 ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the game of baseball. With 1,390 career wins, Anderson retired in 2024 as the Winningest Coach in Big Ten History. Baseball legend aside, what mattered far more to Anderson than success on the diamond was success for his "kids" off the field. Affectionately known to all as "14" he was much more than a coach. He was a mentor, life-advisor, and at times a surrogate father. The comment most often heard among the baseball alumni is "14 changed my life". He impressed that the value of an education and a degree would far surpass a baseball career and bring more meaning to life. 14, leading by example, taught boys how to become men, husbands, fathers, employees, sons and most importantly, productive members of society. Nothing exemplifies this sentiment more than his own life. Above all, John was a man of faith who valued God and keeping family close. Growing up a true 218-er, John had the joy of experiencing life with older siblings Mike , Barb and younger sister Cindi. Summers that stretched to October spent on Swan Lake as a child turned into a life-long love affair with "the cabin". Known as the family connector, when John met and later married Jan in 1993 he seamlessly wove her into all aspects of his family's unique traditions. His nieces instantly took to her, clamoring for who got to sit on her lap at the baseball games. Rumor has it Jan has even participated in the winter sauna tradition. Daughter Erin, welcomed in 1994, was the apple of Anderson's eye. A life-long fixture at baseball games, Erin became one of Anderson's and Gopher Baseball's biggest fans. Following his games near and far she truly was her dad's number one fan. The feeling was mutual. John and his daughter spoke daily, often multiple times, working through house projects, navigating travel details or just offering advice for life. All who had the pleasure of knowing John knew his life outside of baseball was also full of 9 holes, midnight saunas, raking his cabin beach into pristine condition, sharing a meal and a drink with the family on the cabin deck, and cruising around Swan Lake listening to the infamous and perfectly curated "Anderson Anthology" playlist. A testament to his legacy, John was surrounded by immediate family, life-long friends and the baseball faithful as he passed. After further review of the John's final play, God's call stands, safe at Home. John was preceded in death by his father Leroy and is survived by wife Jan of 33 years; his daughter Erin; his mother MaryAnn Anderson; his brother Mike (Karen) nieces Kate(Kris) Arnebeck and Lisa (Ryan) Crouley; his sister Barb (Dave) Moser, niece Amy (John) Friederichs; his sister Cindi (Jim) Latvala and nephew Bob (Tracy) Latvala and many beloved cousins, grand nieces, grand nephews and friends. Services are planned on August 10th, including Visitation starting at 1:30 PM with service to follow at 3:00 PM at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 215 S. 8th St, Minneapolis. A Celebration of Life will follow at 6:00 PM on the University of Minnesota campus at the Joel Maturi Volleyball Pavillion,1925 University Ave SE, Minneapolis.
