Joachim Hossick Schott

Joachim (Achim) Hossick Schott, age 66, of Mpls, MN, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025 after a brave fight against stomach cancer. His wife, Emilie, and son, Gabriel, were at his side. A loving husband and a wonderful father, Achim provided Emilie and Gabe with a lifetime of dear and treasured memories. Achim was born in Schlüchtern, Germany on July 12, 1958. Part of his heart remained there, and he maintained a close connection to his beloved hometown and people. Yearly family trips to Schlüchtern were vital to him, as was teaching his son German from an early age. At 18, Achim entered the Technical University of Berlin, where he completed his PhD in Physics. After meeting Emilie on New Year's Eve in Berlin, Achim moved to Minneapolis to be with the love of his life. The couple married in 1991 and together they had many wonderful adventures, including raising their son. Achim was dedicated to his family, and despite his career demands, prioritized spending quality time with them. He was a loving father to Gabe - coaching, camping, instilling curiosity, sharing knowledge, teaching German, and so much more. Achim completed a post-doc position at the U of MN and began his professional career at DataCard. In 2000 he joined Medtronic, retiring as Distinguished Scientist in 2022, and remaining as a consultant until 2024. In recognition of his technical contributions to Medtronic and the biomedical device industry as a whole, in 2014 Achim was honored to be inducted into the Bakken Society. After retirement, Achim thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at the Bakken Museum, the Minnesota Museum of American Art, and serving as a Board Member of the 612 Sauna Society. Achim was a humble man who had a depth of compassion and humanity that enabled him to connect with nearly everyone. He loved and saw the beauty of nature and was awed by it. He was a seeker who inspired others to be curious and to engage in a quest for knowledge, meaning, and beauty. He loved being active, and took pleasure in his regular sportive pursuits. A skilled scientist, he also delighted in art, literature, philosophy, poetry, and music, and it gave him great joy to engage with these passions. He has been and will continue to be loved and cherished by his family and many friends. Achim is survived by his wife Emilie, son Gabriel, sister Sabine [Roland], niece Lola, brother-in-law David Hossick, family and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Hans and Erna Schott, and the family dogs Molly and Ella. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at Lakewood Memorial Chapel, 3600 Hennepin Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN. Kaffee und Kuchen reception to follow.
